PayScale calculated the gender pay gap by analyzing data from a poll of 1.4 million full-time employees. It used an algorithm to estimate the controlled median pay for women by adjusting for factors such as experience, education, skills, company size and management responsibility and other factors.

If you omit some of the factors which increase the wage gap such as; Hours worked per week, Overtime hours worked per week, Sick time used, Years of consecutive Work, Work gaps. These factors will affect raises, and salaries. Someone working 35 hours a week "full time" with the same job should not be making as much as a person working 50 hours.

Can anyone find the exact variables controlled for? All I can find is this:

PayScale's Inside the Gender Pay Gap report examines the difference in median earnings of men and women overall, as well as by marital and family status, across industry, job family, degree level, generation, management status, job level, state, and metropolitan statistical area. Using our proprietary compensation algorithm, we are able to estimate a controlled median pay for females by adjusting for outside compensable factors across gender (years of experience, education, company size, management responsibilities, skills, and more), and calculate the difference in pay between similar men and women working the same jobs. All data is collected from ~1.4 million full-time employees who successfully completed the PayScale Survey between July 2013 and July 2015.

No mention of hours worked per year.

Types of job worked is just one factor. Other factors include

-Men on average are more likely to work full time hours than women

-Men on average put in more overtime hours than women

-Men on average work more hours per year than women on average

Shush! They don't want analysis, just the conclusion: "the pay gap is real".

There's also a pay gap between unemployed stoners and go-getters, but nobody is suggesting we give checks to the former.

[–]evolutionof 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

we don't have to write them checks for not working, but we should give the stoners preference for jobs, and pay them more to make up for the hours they won't put in. /s

Some contradictions from the article:

Women in the United States are paid less for equal work than men in all industries ..."The gender pay gap is absolutely real," said Aubrey Bach, senior editorial manager of PayScale Inc.

↕

"If a woman can get into the tech industry and stay there it is a kind of a meritocracy," said Bach. "You are going to be paid equally...

The report found the largest gender pay gaps in the mining, quarrying and gas exploration industries...

↕

Despite the value of education, the report found it does not solve the problem because the gap was widest among men and women with PhDs, followed by MBA holders.

How does she mean that in those industries? Like between male and female miners or male and female mining engineers? Or between a male miner or the secretary of the mining company?

Also some interesting facts:

"If a woman can get into the tech industry and stay there it is a kind of a meritocracy," said Bach. "You are going to be paid equally. Unfortunately when you look at the demographic very few women go into the tech industry, especially in technical roles, which are the most highly paid."

Unfortunately for politicians too, people have their own will. I think there are plenty of campaigns addressing women about tech industry, I believe that it turns many women towards that field, but why is she complaining that the number is still very few? Which is more important to her, other women having an gender balance in tech industry or the free will of other women?

"A big reason for the gender pay gap is that men and women tend to work in different jobs. Men dominate higher paying jobs, engineering, construction mining, and women dominate jobs like teaching and social work," Bach explained.

It would take me 15 minutes to write an article about the wage gap between British taxi drivers and British race car drivers.

Some women about gender pay gap:

Attention folks, you all are doing it wrong! Men, shame on you for going for well paying jobs instead of jobs where you can serve the community for less money. Women, you are doing it wrong living life by your own choices, your goal in life should be to go for high paying jobs, no matter if you are interested in the industry or not, and achieve an gender and wage equality!

Research has shown that women also do not negotiate for salary increases as often or for as much as men and they still face the maternal wall, when companies expect them to leave to care for children, which contributes to the pay gap.

I have a friend whose wife outearns him (he's a teacher). He was the one staying home with his first child. Any woman interested please PM me for his number!

"Companies in the past haven't linked the return on investment for fostering diverse workforces," said Bach "and they haven't been aware of the really subtle behaviors that are preventing women from getting hired in high-paying roles or rising to executive levels."

I might be wrong, but deep down companies don't give a shit about men or women. They only give a damn about profit and staying in business. IIRC I've read an article about how female employees are contributing to a better workplace by dissolving stress by their presence only. I doubt a company would let go a workaholic woman, or wouldn't appreciate her after she wants to look for new challenges or maybe more pay.

"Women in the United States are paid less for equal work than men in all industries and a new report released on Thursday showed the widest discrepancy in wages is between married men and women with children.

Fathers earned the highest overall median salaries at about $67,900, compared to $46,800 for married mothers, and single women with children had the lowest median salary at $38,200."

The first paragraph mentions equal work and then, without clarifying, the 2nd paragraph they use the uncontrolled figure from the study which does not measure equal work or equal qualifications. When they actually compare using the controlled figure the gap is much smaller and in some cases virtually disappears.

You can see for yourself on the tab "How family impacts pay".

Men tend to take less time off from work than women. Your not getting paid if you are not at work.

[–]Swiggy 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

There are all kinds of factors that influence pay. They use the figures that don't control for any of those to make the gap seem as large as possible. And what is worse many times they make it seems like the uncontrolled numbers they present are for the same number of hours in the same type of work, they are deliberately misleading people.

Yet again feminists saying that secretaries should be paid the same as CEOs. When will the general public realise that these nut cases are as anti-science as you can get? They have should have no credibility and nothing they say should be trusted.

[–]icefire54 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nothing new. Women choose to do different things so they get paid less.

[–]franklindeer 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We could cancel out all of the important factors that lead to this with the exception of hours worked and still end up with the same headline. This is totally misleading obviously.

[–]soalone34 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So assuming there is a gender pay gap, what are the proposed solutions?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Despite the value of education, the report found it does not solve the problem because the gap was widest among men and women with PhDs,

Are we comparing HIS Ph.D in Computer Science with HER Ph.D. in Wommyns Studies and Gender again? Even if the graduated Tumblr cum laude, who gives a shit?

I like that they mention WA state. WA's "$100,000" earning thing is skewed by the fact that Bill Gates is technically considered a software engineer, he tends to skew the curve. Of course, they also say it's a meritocracy... amazing more women don't prove their own merit by jumping in...

More telling headline:

"Women work fewer hours and focus on work-life balance more than men in all industries, ever level: new report"
