The stereotype about women being better with people is utter bullshit, it's Women Are Wonderful effect in its purest form. Men are pretty gosh darned good at being polite and people-oriented, but since women are preeeetttyyyyyyy and have softer voices, that means they're "better with people", fuck off with that shit.

Let's flip it around: "The best STEM jobs now require spatial awareness and analytical skills. And that's better news for men than women."

Attributing a certain skillset to a specific gender is somehow only ok if it involves women being better at something.

Deming is the author of a new working paper, “The Growing Importance of Social Skills in the Labor Market,” which shows how today’s high-skill, high-paying jobs — like consultants and managers — increasingly require interpersonal skills.

Any idiot can have interpersonal skills. High-priced managers and consultants are also the first to be fired in an economic downturn. The increased emphasis on interpersonal skills is just a consequence of an overall shift to a service economy, IMO.

The link between women’s documented advantage in social skills and their increasing presence in social-skill-intensive jobs might explain the narrowing of the gender gap in employment and earnings, he says.

All Hail, the New Age of HR.

Yep, because gender studies, identity politics and social justice will drive us to Mars, build the quantum computer and cure diseases. /s

ok, so women are getting more of the "social" jobs than men. but is that because they're better at it, or because they are simply not capable of doing anything else?

and the article contradicts itself. "more jobs will be automated" and "teamwork will be more valuable." but if more jobs are automated, teams will be smaller, with more technical people and needing less interaction. i.e., 10 people flipping burgers well be replaced with one person manning the machines and another cleaning them. interaction with customers will be via kiosk, phone app, or an automated voice via AI.

and tech job growth has "slowed" because all the jobs that have been shipped overseas, but the demand will always be there. I cannot say the same for the so-called "skill" of "being likable."

Or because women derive more fulfillment from these jobs relative to other jobs than men?

I don't think women are better team players than men.

They are, but only when it comes to team woman.

Upvote for mentioning AI. Great strides are being made in AI that may one day even result in highly effective AI salespeople. Even now though, AI technologies like speech-to-text, OCR, etc, have the capability to replace a whole lot of functions that used to be performed by (typically female) secretaries.

The fact is that no one's jobs are going to be saved except for people in STEM. If women think their 'social skills' will save them they're delusional.

Here's the paper the article is based on.

Are Women More Social?

The gist of our view was that there are two different ways of being social. In social psychology we tend to emphasize close, intimate relationships, and yes, perhaps women specialize in those and are better at them than men. But one can also look at being social in terms of having larger networks of shallower relationships, and on these, perhaps, men are more social than women.

It’s like the common question, what’s more important to you, having a few close friendships or having lots of people who know you? Most people say the former is more important. But the large network of shallow relationships might be important too. We shouldn’t automatically see men as second-class human beings simply because they specialize in the less important, less satisfying kind of relationship. Men are social too — just in a different way.

... When two girls are playing together and the researchers bring in a third one, the two girls resist letting her join. But two boys will let a third boy join their game. My point is that girls want the one-on-one connection, so adding a third person spoils the time for them, but it doesn’t spoil it for the boys.

The conclusion is that men and women are both social but in different ways. Women specialize in the narrow sphere of intimate relationships. Men specialize in the larger group. If you make a list of activities that are done in large groups, you are likely to have a list of things that men do and enjoy more than women: team sports, politics, large corporations, economic networks, and so forth.

Huh. I thought the conclusion was that the little girls that won't let a third girl join are jerks.

Why does the media see women's strengths as innate, but men's strengths as signs of privilege (oppression of women)?

If the article's premise is true that men fall short in the people-skills department, then the article should look for a cause, in the same way the media seeks explanations why women don't succeed in STEM. (You won't see the headline, "Good News for Men: High Demand for Math and Science Jobs." In that case, the story would address measures to propel more women into those careers.)

I think that the idea of men having poor people skills is overblown, but a common dynamic does occur where men see extraordinary career success as their only path to being valued by society, whereas women have other sources of validation and acceptance that allow them to view the job they have as "enough." Women don't suffer the same burnout/frustration risk of as man who who is under the pressure of knowing that he must achieve his way out of the trap of male disposability.
