Why the fuck did she get her kids back?!

[–]mochacola 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

By being their biological mom, despite she was not being a mom.

The mother had not intended to return until later in February, but came home early after being alerted that police and children’s services officers were investigating.

Imagine a man doing this...

what is with the court system protecting sociopaths like this woman? just because it looks like a human, speaks like a human, and walks like a human, doesn't mean she's a fucking human

[–]TheWheatOne 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You overestimate the morality of human beings.

[–]Farewell_Justice 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Great. Let's put the kids back in the hands of their abuser.

[–]PerniciousOne 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She was planning on leaving them longer but received notice that the police were investigating. She left them in January, which is winter with no food, no method of heating the home.

Her children should be taken away from her.

Another mother who left her teenage daughter with a freezer full of pizza and oven chips for six weeks while she flew off to visit her toyboy abroad also escaped prison in 2008.

The woman left her 14-year-old daughter £100 to live on and was found guilty of neglect after a two day trial.

But she received a suspended sentence of 13 weeks' custody and was ordered to do 130 hours unpaid work and pay £450 costs.

To be fair, this one seems reasonable, as long as the girl in question still had some method of transport to school. 14 is old enough to reasonably expect her to be able to look after herself, and pizza and chips isn't a terribly healthy diet, but it'll keep her alive, and she can just stick the leftovers in the fridge to have for breakfast and lunch the next day.

Pizza tastes better cold anyway. ;)

The one kid was 13 years old and the other one was 10. There was no infant that needed coddling, and a 13 year old is more than capable of baby sitting a 10 year old and is legally able to do so. This was still poor insight on her part thinking that 3 week duration would be fine to leave them alone, but the situation is not nearly as egregious as some people seem to be making it out to be. We also do not know the details of the circumstance. It says there was not much food left in the home, but she may have left money for the 13 year old to go buy more when they ran out. It says the heating was not working but it's fucking August in England and you don't need heating. These are not helpless infants who are going to die if left alone, the article is clearly slanted to make it sound as bad as possible and people seem to be eating that shit up without a second thought. This was definitely a dumb decision on the part of the mom, but is not as egregious as people are making it out to be, and certainly not something kids should be put into foster care for, give me a break.

Do you honestly believe a 13 year old would have the mental capacity, experience and budgeting skills to make any sum of money last them that duration of time?

[–]TheMer0vingian -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

umm yes? ... a lot of the time anyways, maturity levels can vary greatly at that age, but a 13 year old is not a toddler. Just give him instructions what to buy at the store. 13 year olds are doing algebra, trigonometry, chemistry, and writing essays but apparently are too mentally handicapped to even shower themselves or buy food without their mothers according to this subreddit. Not sure what kind of sheltered childhoods you all had.

What the fuck does a 13 year old need a mother for then? Why would the law say that a 13 year old can't work or even own a bank account? If they're able to take care of themselves for extended periods of time, then why the hell should they be required to live with their parents as dependents?

[–]TheMer0vingian 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If you cant see the difference between leaving them alone for 2 weeks with everything already paid for and provided for that amount of time, and them working and living on their own then I can't really help you here.

[–]RedditorJemi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's a cop out. I think it's fairer to say that you cannot see the similarity between the two cases. In either case, the child is endangered. What if something happens to the kid? What if a stranger comes to the door, or the kid displaces a piece of furniture onto him or herself and can't get to the phone to call 911? What happens then? Any number of horrible things could happen, for which society expects an adult to be there and take responsibility. If the kid can shoulder that burden on his or her own, then a job and a bank account is nothing. If someone gets hurt on the job, at the very least, there will be people around who can call an ambulance. Also, have you met a typical 13 year old? How many parents would even trust a 13 year old to be home alone for 6 weeks? Aren't they going to be worried about the kid destroying the house, taking drugs, etc?

[–]TheMer0vingian 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

This is a 13 year old, not a 4 year old, which makes your examples a little silly. Displaces a piece of furniture onto himself and cant get to the phone? That's something you might worry about in a 4 year old, not a 13 year old.

13 year olds are legally allowed to be home alone and baby sit other children. What would happen if a stranger came to the door while they were babysitting, or got trapped under furniture or whatever while they were at home alone during the day? Society does not expect an adult to be there at all times for an adolescent of that age and these examples are a little fantastical.

Yes 13 year olds are immature. Yes, things would go to shit pretty quickly if they are left alone for multiple weeks, completely agree. No I would not trust my 13 year old to be alone for that long, I have stated multiple times it was a stupid decision on the part of the mother. I have also stated that at that age there is a huge discrepancy in the development and maturity between one 13 year old to the next, and its really something that needs to be looked at on a case-by-case basis in terms of how stupid it was to do. But the bottom line is, would a 13 year old be in any true dire danger by being left alone for a couple weeks if given enough food and/or money to buy food? No. If it were so shocking to leave a 13 year old at home alone they would not be legally allowed to be alone and babysit other children while home alone in literally every single country in existence.

[–]RedditorJemi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's a big difference between being home alone for one day and being home alone for six weeks.

[+]TheMer0vingian -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

Annnnd in come the down votes in typical bandwagon outrage-culture fashion. Oh no, a kid who is old enough and considered legally competent to babysit other kids was left alone at home! The travesty! Better break up the family over it and put him in a foster home, I'm sure that's the best decision to make here.

When I was 13 i would not have given a single fuck if I was left alone at home for a week, assuming of course I was left enough food or given money to buy food, I probably would have been excited to have a chance at looking after myself. It seems a lot of people reading this were still sucking their thumbs and wearing diapers at that age though, apparently completely inept at even feeding or dressing themselves, and requiring their mother at all times. Absolutely insane that people are freaking out over this as though a 13 year old has the same capacity as an infant or toddler.

In Nigerian culture where this lady is from, it is normal for 13 year olds to be given real responsibility and partake in looking after the family. The ethnocentrism and sheer ignorance about how big a deal it actually is to leave a 13 year old at home is astonishing. Some of you guys are really trying hard to turn mens rights into another feminism movement that gets outraged over every stupid thing and essentially make it the same running joke feminism is. Was it a bad decision that lacked insight to leave a 13 year old in charge for a couple weeks? Yeah probably, depending on the maturity and capacity of the 13 year old. Was it outrageous, illegal, or warrant putting the kids into a foster home? Absolutely NO to all three counts, and luckily the government has enough logic to agree with me on this, unlike a lot of people posting here. Seriously, get off your high-horses already.

[–]manicmonkeys 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Babysitting=/=watching someone for 3 weeks. it means watching for an evening, maybe a day tops.

They're minors, and have no ability to legally do anything really, if they have problems while she's gone. Not to mention the lack of heating in the winter.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

A 13 year old is not even close to the legal age of consent. Leaving a 13yr old home alone for a day no probs. leaving them alone for 3 weeks with a 10 yr old is child neglect and should automatically result in losing custody of them.

How would a 13 yr old pay any bills to stop the power, phone etc going out? The mother abandoned the children so she could go off galavanting.

[–]TheMer0vingian 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

You can pay bills before hand, you can pay bills on the internet (which nearly 100% of people do). Even if you didnt pay, power and phone will not be shut off in 3 weeks of arrears.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And yet the children had no power or water and little food. So your argument holds no water.

Anyone who would abandon their children to be alone for that length of time, obviously do not care about what would happen to them.

She put her selfish desire for a holiday ahead of the needs of her children. She made zero attempt to ensure they had adequate adult supervision, nor did she make any proper arrangements to ensure the children had access to power, food etc.

She should never be permitted to be near any children for the rest of her life.

[–]TheMer0vingian -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It doesnt say they had no water (water runs freely from the tap...). It also does not say they had no power. It says there was no heating. It also ignores the fact that it is the middle of august in England, and you dont need heating. We also dont know the circumstances as to whether or not they had money available to buy more food as they needed. A lot of false statements and assumptions being made here.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sigh, did you even bother to read the article?

It also ignores the fact that it is the middle of August in England and you don't need heating.

The article quite clearly states that the woman was arrested in February, which means that the children were left alone since January which is the middle of winter in England.

It is understood they continued to go to school while she was away - but when officers visited the house, they found it in an unkempt condition with no food, heating or gas.

So yeah, the kids only survived because they went to school and were probably fed at school. If they hadn't gone to school we would be looking at a homicide.
