This is false. The study never asked the women if they were assaulted. The study asked about unwanted sexual contact.

This sexual assault epidemic theme is certainly well funded. Money for timely surveys with consistent results, that costs "extra $." Give me funds and I can find or create for you a non scientific survey that gives you whatever numbers your looking for. It's all about framing questions and targeting the right population.

Their is money behind all this, real money, slushed through the muddy waters of think tanks and PR agencies. Manufactured consent is real. I'm thinking at least some of that money is from trial lawyer interests, title 9 is creating a fucking never ending gravy train of litigation.

Also where are the people that started this witch hunt hysteria working now. This is how corution in our political system works if you push the correct agenda while in government position you, your're spouse or family members are rewarded with lucrative employment positions, speaking gigs, pulp mill subsidizing publishing deals etc.. So who is writing the checks to the Dear Colleagues author and her cohorts?

I wish I had the time to follow the money on this one because something really stinks about how these is playing out. All the identity politics shit coming out and timed to come to a head during highly contested presidential election cycle.

I'm not a conspiracy fan but I am firm believer in the confluences of interest and a lot of them are coming together on this 1 in 5 thing. Real data real information seldom boils down easy to a easy to digest talking point like "one in five".

Let's just look at the first two paragraphs of the article and take them at face value (so not even going into the phrasing of the questions in the survey and the author's interpretation of answers).

A lot of women claim they were sexually assaulted. That doesn't mean it happened. For starters, any self-defined feminist is likely to answer a poll question affirmatively because they think that sexual assault is a problem and will want any survey to show that. Second, we're living in an environment where women - especially college women - think that everything is rape (if you're drunk it is rape; if you didn't continuously verbalize "yes" it is rape; if you regret giving consent it is rape, etc. etc. etc.) Third, in an anonymous survey, women are likely to use an incredibly broad definition of assault because it has become a status symbol - almost a right of passage - to declare yourself a sexual assault victim.

But the circle of victims on the nation’s campuses is probably even larger.

In other words, we took this survey and are going to report the results, but even we don't believe the results; so you probably shouldn't either.

Many others endured attempted attacks, the poll found, or suspect that someone violated them while they were unable to consent.

"I think I might have been raped"? Isn't that a virtually meaningless response?

Some say they were coerced into sex through verbal threats or promises.

So now "he said he'd love me forever if I had sex with him" is defined as sexual assault. Good grief.

i haven't seen the actual study so i cannot comment negatively or positively about its methodology re reading it. that said the fact they publish snippets of the results without a link to the data and the way it was gathered and sorted is highly suspect. a good survey is always put down on papaer and given in the form of a report including methodology, colection, and then the raw data.

given that they refused to present anything but what they chose to from the survey, its not exactly something i could trust, many people trusted previous surveys but once the methods and the standards of data collection were investigated the whole idea of the stats being in any way scientific just evaporated.

it still deals with peoples feelings and opinions in an area of human life which already has a huge grey area in it, even if the survey was rigorous, people opinions will still cloud the facts when they are asked to give an opinion rather than a factual statement.

all in all, i have no reason to trust this any more than previous statements, but if the report and its methods were published i would have to revisit it.

For those downvoting: why? The 2007 study was flawed by a bad sample set, but this one has a random sample that seems far more representative.
