Next we'll see a diversity officer discriminating against white people and men...nah, no one would be that stupid.

Based on that photo she could very well be "morbidly obese". Not a good look for the health minister.

That tub is a health minister? Good god.

[–]occasionalumlaut 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't go to a morbidly obese physical trainer or nutritionist or anyone else that is supposed to represent health who doesn't so why should we have a health minister who doesn't reflect health.

Because the health minister isn't a personal trainer or nutritionist, and isn't solely concerned with obesity either? The qualification for "health minister" does not (or should not) consist of "is fit!", or even "is not obese", it should be that the minister is capable of doing the job. Depending on how much you'd prefer a technocracy, it might even be "must be qualified in governance and societal health specifically".

It's like demanding that the defense minister be infantry, or the finance minister a bank teller, and so on.

Let's have a Minister of Finance who's a gambler.

Minister of Defense who's a pacifist.

Minister of Education who's a young Earth Creationist

Pacifists don't even defend themselves though. They just sit there in non-violent protest.

[–]occasionalumlaut -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You think this is a counter-argument, but is it? The claim is that in some way a minister should personify his resort. I am not sure what that would mean in many cases. Do you think a defense minister should be a soldier? Can a disabled person be the minister for sports? Can we have a minister for domestic issues who wasn't born in the country? What about arts and culture? Should we make a minister for that draw a picture or sculpt something to show how they are an artist?

[–]tygertiger 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Funny that in Canada every Minister responsible for the Status of Women since 1981 has been a woman.

[–]occasionalumlaut 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fine. Do they have to be? That's the question I'm trying to get answers for. Because I think the issue with Hoffman isn't so much that she doesn't represent some idealised form that weakly corresponds to her position, but rather specifically that she's fat.

Because the Alberta minister for aboriginal affairs is a white woman. The minister for forestry and agriculture has an agricultural background, but isn't a logger or farmer. The minister for culture and tourism has a bachelor in education. Which is great, because he is also the education minister. The minister for energy is an ex-teacher and consultant.

It goes on and on like that. Nobody is actually currently some sort of embodiment of their position, and many don't even have a relevant background.

Yet we're talking about the fat health minister. Why is that?

[–]Tb0n3 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a matter of their respect for what they say. Sayings like "practice what you preach" and "do as I say, not as I do" spring to mind.

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Typically defense ministers and finance members have a background in those areas.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's politics dude. Your competence is only half the equation. People have to BELIEVE you're competent as well.

[–]the_gil 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In Quebec, our health minister is also morbidly obese and had also received insults based on his weight and his ability to promote health questioned. This is proof that it is not sexism. But I guess it's not surprising such a comment would be made about her situation when you look at where it comes from: "a gender studies lecturer said".

People made fun of Bill Clinton's weight, and Al Gore's too.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Chris Christie gets it regularly from late night talk show hosts, and they actually go after him. Looks like gender doesn't matter.

[–]atypicalgamergirl 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It isn't sexism so much as it is a reaction to the concept of having a "do as I say, not as I do" person in general as a Health Minister.

[–]CoccyxCracker 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fat women are beautiful and sexy snowflakes. It's not their fault they're fat! They have condishuns! Fat men are disgusting sexist slobs that need to hit the gym and check their privilege.

Silly disposable male shitlord, it only matters when women are victims. /s

Next let's have a Minister of Animal Husbandry who's a lion. XD

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The typical, "If it happens to a woman it's sexism by default" attitude. Same thing happens with racism.

Men are made fun of for being fat too, it has nothing to do with sexism. "Equality" means nothing to these people. Victim complexes are the worst.

[–]jongallant 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If I was fat, I don't think I'd even apply to become the next Health Minister. That would just be embarrassing.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

If this lady is morbidly obese in politics normally it shouldn't matter no one should give a shit, she is hired for her mind not her body and she could be Jabba the hut for all I care. However the problem is this lady is the Health Minister! I think that is the reason there is criticism.

I wouldn't go to a morbidly obese physical trainer or nutritionist or anyone else that is supposed to represent health who doesn't so why should we have a health minister who doesn't reflect health.

This guy is still a dick for criticizing her weight, it's just petty and It is unfortunate that women in politics are probably judged more on their appearance and if she wasn't the health minister I would be more on her side. but because she is not reflecting her job I am not sure I can be.

To be fair though, I don't know her story, maybe she's already lost 200 pounds and runs a mile a day or has an endocrine disorder and maybe she is brilliant but if your body mass index is morbidly obese and you are our provinces voice of health it doesn't reflect well.

[–]empathaur 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or maybe, MAYBE, she is fatty fatty two by four, and she couldn't fit through the kitchen door.
