Authority is given by those being lead. If it is not given, then the leader must exert control, use the force of their position, hence they come across as bossy: authoritarian, controlling, dictatorial. A talented teacher will be given authority. One who is self-doubting, self-centered, ideological, and/or career minded will have to resort to bossiness to get cooperation. Those in position because of social promotion will not be seen as having earned it, whether a quota woman, or the boss's nephew. Enthusiasm and competence will attract authority effortlessly, though it's hard for a woman to demonstrate those qualities to classes who have been brow-beaten through school by legions of bossy mediocre female teachers.

Why does it expose gender bias? Isn't it possible that female teachers actually are more likely to be annoying and bossy while male teachers are more likely to be clever and awesome?

This is the problem with feminism (or, really, any activist movement); rather than looking for possible alternative explanations for differences, they jump to the conclusion that the differences are a result of gender bias.

Same with the "pay gap" - the only possible explanation is gender bias if you talk to a feminist (or Barack Obama). No possible way that personal choices, hours worked or time taken away from work could be the explanation.

If the genders were reversed, the article would take on the tone of "Male teachers are ruining our children's education!"

Seems fairly obvious. Consider the ridiculous barriers to entry that exist for prospective male teachers in the modern age. Only the most irreproachable, dedicated and generally superlative have a hope of getting and then keeping the position in the first place. So yes, the average rating of the very best among men could be reasonably expected to be higher than the average rating taken over a much larger pool of women taken from a wider range of achievement levels.

I've seen this, and I think it's generally true. I don't think women are just naturally worse leaders, but generally they just don't know how to properly "lead". Many female superiors I've met come off as assertive. The type that demand respect, rather than earn it. I have no doubt this is a cultural thing. Men, growing up, are constantly in a situation where they are dealing with the upfront follower/leader dynamic. Where women are sort of more situated to deal with conflict passively and secretly. So once they get into the work force, they are generally behind the curve.

This is strictly anecdotal evidence but throughout my K-12 years I can remember only having a handful of male teachers and obviously the education department was rampant with female teachers.

The two male teachers I had that got the most flack were because one had no sense of hygiene and the other was so old and he reminds me now of the old man from "Up". Great guy but if you pissed him off he went medieval.

Now the women? Well, I can only remember only having issues with ONE female teacher myself but in every class there was always one male student that the female teacher would just lose her shit with no matter what. Every class. As I mentioned this is all anecdotal but I can remember my female teachers freaking out on a class regularly in almost every one. Though there were a few old lady teachers who laid down the law in awesome ways.

Regardless many of the male teachers I had did have patience and were fun to learn with. The female teachers, while some were amazing, most felt like I was being talked down to more than anything.
