While detectives used to post ads suggesting an underage teen or child was available for sex, they now routinely post more innocuous personal ads of adults on traditional dating sites. When men – many of them under 25 with no criminal history - respond, officers switch the bait and typically indicate their age is really 14 or 15 years old. However, sometimes the storyline isn't switched until the men, who were looking for legal love, already start falling for the undercover agent.

According to arrest affidavits inspected by 10 Investigates, law enforcement is also now routinely making first contact with men who have done nothing wrong, responding to their ads on dating sites like PlentyOfFish.com. After men start conversing with what they think are adults, officers change the age they claim to be, but try to convince the men to continue the conversation anyway.

This type of shit is only possible due to strict liability, which is ironic. It is supposed to protect children from adults. But the cops who entrapped the men were adults themselves, so what does that say? That an adult who pretends to be a child should be absolved of liability for their own actions?

These tactics aren't limited to this area. They do it for drugs for too.

Police aren't there to protect you (as they have no legal obligation to do so - google it). They are there to ARREST you. That is their job.

Sounds like some police have a bit of a problem with fanaticism in their vendetta to combat sexual predators.

I'm all for rounding up the scum, but if the dude is cleared by a court of law then that should be the end of it. It's incredibly irresponsible for an authority figure to continue against the cleared individual.

I dunno, whilst I think this is wrong -- as long as they told them before arresting them and the person still went through with it, it's not necessarily "illegal". It's a very obnoxious way of dealing with the situation when there's way more important things they could be dealing with.

However, ultimately, if someone says "hi i'm 26" and you start talking to them in regards to a relationship, then says "oh actually i'm 17 16" -- then all talks of sex should stop. That doesn't necessarily mean the conversations have to stop, there's nothing wrong with dating an underage person, just not having sex with them. If you have the intentions to wait until they are legal then I am pretty sure that is not breaking any laws.
