Update: here is the current settlement option she proposed, $2500/month plus half of my retirement 401k, however i suggested that in the event she move in with a partner we need to reevaluate the $2500 as the kids alone will not spend that amount, and her expenses will be cut in a half, she did not like that part

Usual advice, take a sabbatical, say zero income and impossible to find similar paying job in area, let Judge impute and decide as needed. Almost certain to get a lower amount vs. going there saying you make a lot of money and want to be 'fair'

With a medium term marriage like that it’s most likely going to come down to a judge’s discretion. It’s crazy there are no real hard rules on this when so much money is at stake.

In my state (WA) alimoney for medium term marriages (5-20 years) is usually done at 1 year for every 3 years of marriage. So just based on this, I would expect you to pay approximately 40% of your net take home pay in alimony combined with child support for 36-42 months.

Depending on how old your kids are, alimony will cut off at that time and you’ll be left with child support only. Of course she will have it recalculated at that time since she is no longer receiving alimoney and you’ll end up paying more in child support once alimoney drops off. If I were you I would ask for alimoney to be tapered off so it give both parties a “soft landing”

I’ll give you my numbers since we are similar earners. My ex makes $80K and I make $185K, 14 years married. I pay $2000/month in alimoney and $1306/month in child support. I’m also on the hook to provide health insurance. My alimoney is tapered at $2000 for 1 year, $1500 for 1 year, $1000 for 1 year then done. Of course she dragged her feet during the divorce and got $2000 a month in “temporary alimoney” for 2.5 years while the divorce was ongoing. But hey at least I got 50% equity of my house. Don’t get it twisted too, even if you get 50% custody of your kids you will still pay her child support. The courts incentivize it with matching funds from the federal government.

Just thank god you don’t live in my state. I’m also on the hook for 4 extra years of “post secondary” support until my kids are 22. At least those checks go to them and not my parasite of an ex wife.

She is going to start high. You also have medical and dental benefits. When does support stop for your state? College exp. She is going to try to add stuff like cell phones that you pay in addition to.

I would see (after she gives you a number) If you could lump so out of the alimony.

You should focus on making sure your kids have a good standard of living when they’re with you and with their mom. The court will decide for you, unless you can agree to something.
