I work 5x8 hour shift but I work nights. Certainly not easy to have the kids when I work night shift and my days off are during the week. But I do have 50/50 time with them. Let’s of days with no sleep is my answer. It’s not fun or healthy. But dang, I need my kids

24/72 is tough to match evenly, but a lot of dads make it work by anchoring the schedule to your shift rotation rather than a standard week. Consistency for the kids matters more than equal nights on paper.

I work 48/96 and have 50/50 custody doing 3 and 3. My son is with me on my first 3 days off, with my ex next 3.

I don’t know what “24/72” is, but I have a non standard schedule and am fighting for 50/50. Its not uncommon for their to be carveouts for for people with odd schedules that make it possible for 50/50. Doctors, railroad workers, aviation workers, firefighters, etc. just because they are successful professionally doesn’t mean they are bad parents and can’t manage 50/50 parent time.

That kind of schedule makes “clean” 50/50 really hard, you’re not alone in that.

A lot of guys in 24/72 setups end up building the schedule around their off days instead of trying to force a standard week. So more time on your 72 hours off, then lighter or no time during your 24 on shift.

Some do a rotating setup where the other parent holds the school routine, and you get solid blocks when you’re off. It’s not perfectly even on paper, but it can still be fair and more stable for the kids.

What usually matters more is consistency and that the kids know what to expect week to week.
