Good advice here. We’ve already agreed on most basic things between us. The finances is where the negotiations will happen. I’m trying to keep things civil in the outside while boiling with anger on the inside.

Their whole point is to be impartial. If your lawyer is present, it will probably come down to the strength of their argument and rebuttals.

I don’t think it’s going to matter. By definition a mediator’s job is to stay balanced. The best measurement is probably whether both parties are unhappy with the mediator.

If at all possible, get it done through mediation. Collaborative and litigation are exponentially more expensive.

Mediation with a lawyer advising you is by far the most cost effective and fastest way to divorce. Using lawyers to fight for you or even just negotiate on your behalf costs so much. Negotiate for yourself but have a lawyer explain your rights and obligations, and to let you know what hills to die on and what to let go.

I wouldn't worry about the gender of the mediator. Look at their credentials. If it is a lawyer who also mediates it's going to be expensive. A non-lawyer mediator is often more creative and addresses some of the underlying emotions that get in the way of reaching agreement. A lawyer mediator will just focus on the legal outcome if you went to court instead. A non lawyer might get you to open up about why you are so set on something being a certain way or not be a certain way and that helps push you to resolution faster.

My wife’s choice to divorce also. we have a female mediator and has been very neutral. As that’s their job. No sense fighting (unless you can’t agree on values, alimony, child support, custody, etc…). We’ll have individual attorneys for an independent review of the mediator, which isn’t required but recommended. Good luck

I don’t think it matters. I went this route with female one. One thing I would recommend is to get a lawyer for an advisory role. So you will know what the court would ask of you and you can negotiate from there. Find a lawyer that has a lot of mediation experience. It will cost you around a few k.
