I’m recently divorced and trying to sanity-check some financial discrepancies from my marriage.

My ex made at least $20k more than me throughout the marriage and received ~$40k in inheritance. In 2018, we started depositing paychecks into a joint checking account. She handled the finances and I didn’t review them at the time.

From 2018–2022:

  • I contributed: $510,644
  • She contributed: $416,050

Withdrawals during that period:

  • Me: $26,500
  • Her: $206,228

Net, I contributed ~$484k vs. her ~$210k. The joint account also paid her student loans and multiple credit cards; I paid my own credit card separately from my personal checking account.

What’s throwing me off is that post-divorce, while paying an entire mortgage and household expenses alone, I’m saving about $15k more per year than I ever did while married.

Questions:

  • Does this seem unusual?
  • Is there any post-divorce recourse here?
  • Should I have a CPA, forensic accountant, or attorney review this?

Not looking to relitigate. Just trying to understand whether this is worth pursuing or letting go.

Thanks.
