29M. NYC. Married for five years this December. I want out but afraid of the financial fallout.

Separate accounts totaling about 30k. Hers has 22 and I have about 9-10. We live in NYC. No property, no kids, no pets.

I make 70K a year. She makes 80k. Lease is up in September.

I’m concerned about how to afford a divorce without ending up homeless. For reals.

I have no family here. My one parent is aloof and lives in another time zone. My relatives in another state don’t reply to texts. I have plenty of friends, a few that would lend me a couch for a bit. But no parents house to crash at or anything.

With my income and near lack of savings, how would divorce even work? How do I pay the deposit on a new shitty apartment and pay lawyer fees? I feel like I’ve read a ton online but still don’t have a clear understanding of my options/money involved.

I want to be free but the risks seem so vague and shapeless and yet overwhelming.

And my wife’s family is legitimately rich. She could literally never even be ALLOWED to be homeless. They live abroad. We got married abroad.

Idk what to do anymore. I feel like money and the fear of homelessness this city has put into me has me trapped.
