Been married for 6 years. 8 years together total. Like many guys here I'm sure the experience started out great and then hit bumps. Our first bumb was when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I have a very successful position with a company that requires me to travel a lot. So while I wanted to stay home and support her, being the sole breadwinner at that point kept me on the road making money. I understood the situation and as a man I stepped up work wise to make sure medical bills were paid. Made sure our mortgage, utilities, grocerys were bought and I did all under the impression that I was "doing my part as a man" fast forward a few years and she's cancer free, only to then hit another bump and find out my MIL (wife's mother) has stage 4 lung cancer. She moves out to her hometown 4 states away for three months to take care of her. After her cancer bout I beceame the sole breadwinner, she has a small cleaning business that she doesn't manage well and barely covered her own expenses leaving her in a position to contribute nothing to our financial picture. After her mom passed shes become a shell of a person. Plauged by deep bouts of depression that have left her unable to function as an adult and sure as hell not functioning as a romantic mate or partner in life. Our sex life is gone and I've voiced concern. Suggested couples therapy. I've told her that the pressure of me trying to support both of us financially has only led me to resent her to the point where I feel like I have a dependent and not a spouse. Friends, and my therapist have pointed out how much better my own mental health would be if I had a partner that had their shit together. Not someone perfect, but someone in a place that cares about our success as a couple and is making choices that benefit. My only model for marriage is my miserable father that doesn't know what it means to leave a marriage. My parents are miserable and should have separated years ago but my father has stayed for reasons I can't fathom. The pressure of this marriage snd the burdens placed on me feel like a million pounds on my shoulders to the point where I want out. Getting out brings about a ton of fear. Mainly financial, I don't want to keep supporting her under court order. We don't have kids so I'm not worried about child support. I worry about getting taken to the cleaners since I make good money and the resent that will come from that even if I am able to then live my life the way I want. I apologize for the long rant, but I'm scared of leaving and also scared of staying in this same shitty spot. Anyone else that's been in this situation please don't hesitate to dm me with how you handled this. I appreciate you guys taking the time to read this.
