I've been through two for temporary orders and have a "final" in a month so I know a thing or two. They key is being prepared and here are my suggestions

Know your priorities regarding custody, asset division, and support. Focus on what you absolutely need i.e. your "absolute minimum" meaning what you will accept without heading to court.
Understand your financial situation in detail and I mean IN DETAIL. Tax Statements, Bank Statements, Credit Card Statements, Mortgage, All of it. Make sure you know how much you are spending each month. It's easy to know your monthly bills (mortgage, utilities, food, etc.) but remember the quarterly (insurance?) and annual bills (property taxes?). Factor all that in
List your asset and debts such as the obvious ones like home, car, bank, 401k, mortgage, credit card, etc. don't forget the less obvious ones like jewelry, furniture, tools, promissory notes, etc.
Prioritize the children's well-being in custody negotiations. Keep ego out of this one and reserve it for the finances.
Understand what you will get in court. The whole point of mediation is to keep out of court. Understand the law in your state and make that part of your "absolute minimum"
Keep an open mind and be flexible. Most mediations start with both parties far apart and meet in the middle (unless you're me ex) so know your "absolute minimum" start with higher and settle for middle. E.g. you will likely get 60/40 (in her favor) in court for possession. Start with 60/40 in your favor and settle for 50/50.
