Best version of yourself

I think sometimes we use our marriage as an excuse not to become the best versions of ourselves. We stick around in lame jobs for job security. We don’t expand our horizons (join clubs, make new friends, etc) because of the excuse that we are worried it will upset our wives.

Once we are divorced, many of those constraints are removed. If I always wanted to do something, like learn archery, and I said in the past it was because of my ex that I didn’t spend 3 hrs practicing each week, but now that I’m free, I still don’t make any effort after the divorce, then that’s on me.

It’s interesting how sometimes freedom can be frightening. It’s so much easier to have dreams, and blame our ex-wives for blocking them, than actually facing the challenge of realizing those dreams once she’s gone from the picture. Are we really the man we thought we were?

I haven’t pulled the trigger yet and filed but I could see how this theory could be valid. No baggage holding one back any longer. More focus. Doing things (or NOT doing things) for oneself.

It’s so true, it’s funny how many people I know that have told me that my divorce was the best thing to ever happen to me.
