Mediation is different than court and also not a great negotiation. Their goal is to get agreement, not get you a great deal.

Don't expect much. Court-ordered (a/k/a/ compulsory) mediation is rarely effective except for pure financial issues in lower conflict cases. It comes too early in the process (while there's still too much conflict and anger); mediators are hit-or-miss in terms of preparation, skill and effort; and the lawyers often treat it as a tick-the-box endeavor (which, to be fair, it usually is).

In your case it sounds like you don't have a lawyer. In which case, you should go to the mediation prepared to discuss all pending issues and if you have a legal basis for not paying, then stick to your guns or make a low ball offer. If you don't have a legal basis for not paying, you can still be obstinate but in the end you'll just end up putting both yourselves through extra pain because I doubt she's just going to give up. First identify what your state laws are regarding assets and financial separation. Any children? Then there’s child custody and child support to consider. A mediator isn’t necessarily going to word these factors in your favor. He or she is pushing for agreement. Sounds like mediation might not be in your best interest.
