It's neutral and let's her know where you stand.

After my ex moved out, the dogs were the main reason we talked for a long time. These were our kids. Never had any human ones. For a little while, it was our only civil communication.

You know your ex better than anyone. How she is when it comes to animals. Not how she is when it comes to bein around you durning this stressful time. On this subject, i recommend thinking rationally. Not emotionally.

The first thing to realize about pets is that from purely the legal perspective, they're property. Nowadays, courts are sometimes "forced" to treat them like kids with visitation schedules and whatnot but if the parties disagree in any way - nope, court's not having it. So if this were a kid, I'd think she was angling for more parenting time or some custody ruling, etc. (i.e. her motives would have to be analyzed in a direct legal framework). But it's not, so that makes it a bit simpler.

The question is, "does she actually want to see the dog or does she have some ulterior motive for contacting you?" Once you can answer that, you can figure out how to proceed.

No, not really. Unless she just wants to see the dog. Then you can decide, yes or no.

rude not to reply?

Yes, but so what. I think the better question is, "is there a way to reply that will be better than no reply and will still achieve your goals?"
