My ex refused to work for years. I think she stayed due to a pending inheritance (mine) but I refused to touch it. Found out she has been cheating the majority of the marriage. In the last 1.5 years she managed to get a halfway decent job but was still prying at my potential inheritance. No one is dead so I never touched a cent. However the time is coming.

Then I blindsided her cheating ass and our kid knew all about it, stayed with me and now she has to pay me child support. She was abusive to our kid and me (and most everyone else unlucky enough to be around her). She’s 100% on her own. She still hasn’t paid a cent of ordered child support but that’s fine, there’s tax season and jail waiting for her if she doesn’t. She went from leeching off of me for 16 years to being forced to pay CS. Now she knows what it’s like to budget. Welcome to adulting 101.

You should be able to do an skills assessment, where a professional evaluator can look at her education, work experience, physical issues, etc and provides a report to court on what she is capable of making.

It's going to cost you money, so you need to determine whether it will pay off for you.

Hopefully she hasn't been the one handling the financial aspect of the marriage. I did that with my ex and it was a terrible mistake, she ran our finances into the ground.

Have you calculated exactly what the total cost of her and the kids are? If not you need some financial tracking software and perform a cost benefit analysis on staying separated or divorcing.

If you two are separated then you're on the hook for her medical bills, and I guarantee they will just keep going up. Being divorced means child support until the preteen is an adult, and if you can avoid lifetime alimony (which is easier if she's 40 vs 55), then life will suck for those years but you will eventually be on your own. Regardless, the longer you wait the worse off you will be.

Mine claimed she can't work but was healthy enough to have multiple affairs.

She was trying to have her income calculated to $0. She claimed that she applied to 20 different places with no proof, but also says she can't work.

She is getting 1.7k per month ssdi payments and the court was aware of this. (While still living in the house that I paid for)

The judge imputed her to minimum wage (she had 20 years work experience and an associate degree) and still had me pay close to 5 k per month (no kids). Illinois.

In the end, each case is different, each state is different, each stbxw is different, .most importantly, each judge (all with almost no accountability) is different.

The court let the case go on for over 3 and a half years, and let one of their own court orders be completely disobeyed..

The judge also acknowledged that the "guideline" for a simple case like this should take no longer than 18 months. It's all a waste of time. I wish you luck.

Also, realistically what am I looking at paying and how long in alimony for a 20 yr marriage with a wife that hasn’t worked in 20 years?

This will be a problem. Realistically, what can she do for work? Does she have a degree?
