Does anyone have any contemporary resources on step-parenting? I was on youtube and found an interesting clip and now can’t find it. Basically, the Dr. was stating that (from a child’s perspective) a step-parent relationship can only occur when the step-parent takes that role when the child is under 1-2 years of age. Essentially the child only views them as a role model (potentially) or an authority figure.

In fact, the Dr. even dissuades from using the term “step dad” or “step mom”. He goes on to state how destructive it is to force the issue. ie forcing the child to accept discipline, hugs, nurture, etc.

He goes on to speak about blended families. While he supports the notion that the co-habitants can be an effective commune, they are hardly a family. Again, stating that forcing a sibling relationship between children can be very destructive.
