You are correct, but you are missing that your income is jointly earned between you and your ex unless your decree specifically calls out that it is partitioned. So she earned 50% of your income until your divorce. This should significantly reduce your tax liability.

In the exact same boat. She will get all her taxes back from her part time job. I will owe this year even tho we were married most of last year, and I lost two dependents because we split the kids in the JoD. Divorce fucks the guy every way but the fun one

I’m sorry Brother, but I can relate. My ex wouldnt file taxes with me in 2021 and I had to get an extension. My divorce was finalized in May of 2022, and the judge made me go back and file Married/separate for 2021. Got hit with 23,000 in back taxes. It’s not fair at all. It’s just part of the women get everything BS mentality.

We aren't tax experts. Go talk to one locally like an H&R Block, Liberty Mutual, Charles Schwab, etc.

Yes we take the short end of the stick on every single issue. If there’s an issue you haven’t thought about yet, just set your expectations you’ll be on the wrong end of it.

Yep your understanding is correct. My d was filed in the fall and we filed married that year since our d wasnt finalized by the end of the year. In January I changed my withholdings in anticipation of my d being finized later that year and my filing status being changed.

I had kids which we split for tax purposes so my filing status changed from married to single head of household. It hurt some but not as bad as single.
