This will be a long read, based on my experience, the ups and downs and what I’ve come to learn has helped me the most. I believe that anyone reading this who has gone through trauma would likely benefit from this. However, this is for us, the men who may not have the answers or continue to seek and understand. Take your time to read this and try your best to be patient and kind to yourself. I hope this helps you today, and maybe something you can come back to when you are in a place that feels hopeless. There is hope and you are not alone.

  1. You Are Not Broken.

You loved deeply. You committed fully. And now you’re grieving…what was, what never was, and what you thought could be. This guide isn’t here to fix you. It’s here to witness you. You are seen. You matter. And to help you walk forward…not bitter, not broken, but ready to build again.

  1. STAGE ONE: Grounding the Chaos/Storm

Where Do You Feel the Grief?

Before the story, before the pain, check in with your body.

Try This: • Hand to heart. Hand to gut. Say aloud: “I am still here. I am mine. I survived this.” • Notice tension, heat, tightness. This is the grief’s geography.

Anchor Phrase:

“Pain is here, but I am not pain. I can feel this without being consumed by it.”

  1. STAGE TWO: Grieve What Was Lost. Not only who left.

You’re not only grieving a person. You’re grieving: • The version of you who believed. • The dream of mutual protection. • The sacredness you thought was shared. • The loyalty you kept showing, even when it wasn’t returned.

“Pain is here, but I am not pain. I can feel this without being consumed by it.”

  1. STAGE THREE: Make Space for All the Parts

There’s a part of you that still loves her. A part that’s furious. A part that feels stupid. And a part that’s ready to move forward.

Ask yourself: • “Which part of me is most activated right now?” • “Can I meet that part without trying to fix it?” • “What is this part afraid will happen if I let go of her?”

Let each part speak. Let them all be heard.

  1. STAGE FOUR: Untangle Shame from Truth

Reframes for Common Beliefs:

Painful Thought: “I should’ve known better.”

“I wasn’t enough for her to stay.”

“I let her walk all over me.”

“Maybe it was my fault.”

More Honest and Compassionate Reframe:

“I was operating on hope, not hindsight.”

“She couldn’t meet me at the level I was willing to give.”

“I kept showing up hoping she’d rise with me. That was love, not weakness.”

“Responsibility is shared. But deception and disrespect are never deserved.”

  1. STAGE FIVE: Let the Rage Have a Voice Without Becoming It.

Anger is necessary and sacred. What you do with it matters more than whether you feel it.

Try This: • “What is my anger trying to protect?” • “Where do I feel disrespected?” • “What boundary was crossed that I didn’t enforce?”

You’re not ‘too much’ for being angry. You’re just not going to let that anger decide who you become. Harness the power and understand it.

  1. STAGE SIX: Create Your Closure. Even if She Never Does

Closure isn’t something she gives you. It’s what you decide and give to yourself.

Write or speak:

“I release the illusion. I release the story that says I wasn’t enough. I release the hope that kept me in the fog. And I keep the truth. I keep the love I gave. It was real—even if she chose a different path.”

Ritual Ideas: • Burn a letter you never send. • Plant something. • Take a solo trip with a purpose (to mark the threshold). • Visualize and carve a new word into your path (respect, rise, wisdom, discipline, etc).

  1. STAGE SEVEN: Reclaim Yourself in the Aftermath

The mission now is not to find someone new. The mission is to never abandon yourself again.

Vow to Self:

“I will not betray myself to keep someone else comfortable.” “I will never again beg for what should be freely given.” “I will trust myself more than I trust charm or promises or empty words.” “I will be the man I know I am regardless of what the outside world thinks of me.”

  1. STAGE EIGHT: You Are Not Alone

There are thousands of men walking this path silently. Men who gave everything. Men who are building again from the rubble, with integrity and fire.

You are one of them. And you don’t have to do this alone.

Seek a group of friends, gatherings that are uplifting, therapy, etc.

  1. STAGE NINE: What Becomes Possible Now?

You’ve grieved. You’ve seen the truth. You’ve stood in the fire and didn’t burn.

Now ask: • What kind of man do I get to become, now that I’m no longer performing for someone who couldn’t see me? • What would it look like to rebuild not from bitterness, but from clarity? • What kind of love would be possible, if I never had to abandon myself to earn it?

FINAL WORDS

You are not weak for hurting. You are not broken for loving. You are not lost…you’re on your way back to yourself.

And you are worth that return.

I’ll leave you with these final words if you made it to the end. In the darkest moments it is hard to sometimes see how we’re going make it through. When it gets hard and you feel like giving up, my challenge to myself and to you is to ask, what’s the pain that I am running from what’s the pain that I want to get away from? Don’t be afraid to sit with that. If the pain is to hard to carry, reach out to someone…a friend, therapist, even me. You are not alone and I see you. We see all the hard work and dedication you have put in and continue to make by showing up for yourself everyday.
