Right of first refusal, move away clause, (may not be plausible but) graduated plan leading to 50/50 in the order. Legal shared custody, so you have access to medical and school records.make-up time, specific summers, holidays, birthdays, father's day, etc.

Specify who picks up and drops them off and at whose house. Specify days and times. Make the schedule very specific so there's nothing left up to interpretation or disagreement.

Get as much custody time as you can and at least 50%.

A few things I like:

Holiday schedule nailed down airtight. Language specifying from school release at start of the holiday til dropoff at school and morning school restarts.
Summer vacation nailed down airtight. Language where each parent gets to pick their two consecutive weeks first in alternating years, has to notify the other parent of their chosen two weeks by March/April The summer vacation weeks can't be picked such that one parent ends up with 3 consecutive weeks etc.
Set the exchanges to be via school wherever possible - ie. one parent drops off at school on morning of exchange and the other parent picks up from school, to reduce the required interaction with the other parent.
Extracurricular costs split 50/50 but ONLY FOR AGREED extracurriculars, otherwise you end up footing half the bill for outrageously expensive things like equestrian etc.
Schools the children will attend nailed down and preferably for the whole elementary-middle-high school progression which helps fight the move-away when mom finds her next victim and wants to move to where he is. If dad can keep the children in the schools outlined in the decree he stands a better chance fighting the move-away.

A small thing that I found helpful. Agree on who buys the children's clothes etc, we did this (agreed my wife would purchase any item they needed ) and upon being shown the receipt I would give the money to her when I returned the children. Saves a great deal of double purchases.

I forgot the splitting costs thing and regret it already. Wish that was included!

But yeah I think you want to cover as much as possible. I don’t think of it as a custody order but rather as a parenting plan. It’s very flexible.
