Short term marriage, with no children, no support and no substantial assets or debts to divide certainly can be done without a lawyer if there are no other unique issues.

If you have never done it, it can be somewhat daunting. It is all about filling out and submitting the right court forms. Usually, in most jurisdictions you can find a service that can do that for you for a modest fee. Also the courts websites in many jurisdictions will have the necessary court forms for you to fill out the blanks with your information all the way from the original petition for dissolution/divorce, answer/response to the final decree.

Divorce is not the time to DIY. You open yourself to revisiting the divorce agreement in the future if she isn't represented when she changes her mind.

If you can sit at the kitchen table and come up with an agreement without any mediation, then that's the true sign of it being uncontested. In that scenario, there's no reason why you each can't be represented to ensure the document adhere's to your jurisdiction's requirements. (You can't share the same attorney.) And your attorney will help you identify any potential loopholes or areas of concern that can come up in the future.

I’m just starting this same process. I found a local lawyer specializing in family law that will review and file the paperwork lump sum for a fee I was good with. Too many assets and things to consider to do it all by myself. He sent me a long questionnaire that will help him fill out the paperwork for me.

My STBX seems to agree with the terms I can live with. I guess we will see soon enough. 23 years married and started dating when we were 17. We have 12,17 and 20 yo daughters so we want to keep it civil.

FWIW, I am in this process and so far have been able to do it without an attorney. You can download all the instructions and forms online from your state's courts website. Chances are there's someone on YouTube with a video on what to do for your state.

I actually contacted a few attorneys but neither got back to me, I presume because they realized they wouldn't be able to bill me for much just to submit forms.

I'm waiting on my court date now, so it's not over yet, but so far all I've had to pay for is filing fees. I would not advise this for anybody with children, property, or shared assets. It's only working for us because we already have basically equal $ in our respective accounts (though I've been paying all the bills... w/e) and both want out as quickly and easily as possible.
