My husband of 8 years has started reading RP and Men's Rights and it is ruining our marriage. He's had serious issues with depression for a long time, but the last 6 months or so have been really tough. I think he has latched onto this ideology because it provides confirmation for the evil stuff his brain tells him. Like, that I don't really love him and I only care about his money. Or that society sees him as disposable and that his only value is how much he produces.

When he's not feeling depressed, he can see that these views are toxic. He doesn't admit that they are 100% wrong; he will say that he wishes he'd never read them and also say that he doesn't completely believe them (for example, he does believe in "male disposability" but not "hypergamy"), but he will distance himself from them, stop reading RP, and stop fixating so much on his anger and fears. But when he is having a depressive episode, he fixates on these fears, gets really angry and becomes very sad and despairing. This is when he will lash out at me, treat me like a stereotypical man-hating Feminist, or accuse me of stuff that isn't true. These times used to be rare but feel much frequent now--like maybe 30-40% of the time. I can't remember the last time we had a week where this didn't occur at least once.

We have been going to marriage counselling and he is going to therapy, but refuses medication and (at least when he's depressed) doesn't seem to trust therapy very much.

I have a good support network. I am not afraid that he will hurt me. I DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE HIM. While I realize that may be something that might happen if things don't change, I am not entertaining that idea right now and this will not be helpful advice for me.

What I'm looking for is advice on how to maintain my own sanity in the short term. I am hopeful that he will work out some strategies to fight back against his depression. But in the meantime...

Has anyone lived through a loved one falling prey to this philosophy? Has anyone believed it an left it behind? Anyone with a mental illness been seduced by it? What are your stories? What advice would you give for me to maintain my sanity?
