Yup you have to pay. Okcupid is not as good as match. Match is better at filtering out the crazies and low effort dudes. You will encounter some on there but significantly less than other sites. I met my BF on there. Two of my coworkers met their wives on there too (and they’re happy).

I like OkCupid because you can take time answering questions and then only respond to people who don't have deal breakers in their answers. If the guy sends a stupid message or doesn't answer questions the way you prefer than you can ignore them and they will never know that you saw it. I like that my profile is actually hidden from anyone sending a message unless I chose to interact with them.

I only tried Match once and got a really nice message but then found out that I wasn't able to answer unless I paid to send it, which I wasn't willing to do so I deleted that one.

I agree with you about not using Tinder, and I've heard some good things about Hinge so depending on what it is like for your location that might be another option.

If you're going to pay have you considered hiring someone to set up and possibly manage your profiles for you? Some are more legit than others at putting together a good profile so do your research, if you have a subscription with a 3rd party profile management service they can run your profile finding matches and replying to messages, even run up a list of guys interested in calling for you to choose from, I hear the results aren't great but better than when people do it themselves.

I find OLD a cesspit with the occasional normal person that wandered in there by accident before tucking tail and running as soon as they saw what was there but some people outside my region and age group (they have a bigger pool to choose from) have met ok people on it. Personally I would take the time and money you'd waste online and use it to go out, pick some interests you like, do some speed dating or even singles trips if the dating scene is your thing, you will see the same faces at singles events anyway. And lurk anonymously on the big adult sites, you'd be surprised how dumb some of these guys are, they post the same profile on them except saying the things they can't on dating sites, like fetishes or they're married, some of them have no condoms, fetishes, swinging and gay on their preferences, anyone anywhere basically.

Alright, this could be dependent on location, but I absolutely hate Match.com and OkCupid. But if I had to pick one, I would never pay for OLD again (aka Match.com).

I paid for Match for 6 months awhile back. A lot of those “messages” behind the paywall don’t actually exist, there weren’t many good matches or lack thereof when I signed up (and I’m in a MAJOR west coast city), and the same people from Match were all on the other free sites anyways (Tinder, Bumble, Coffee Meets Bagel, Hinge, Plenty of Fish, etc). Match is super spammy and has no shame in saying “new messages!!!!” when there aren’t any. AND, so many of the profiles are outdated, no longer active, or don’t respond to you anyways! I had two dates from Match in that entire time frame, compared to Tinder with dates once a week when I really tried. YMMV

I’ve tried all the sites, including eHarmony (what a joke...1 match literally lmao). You truly don’t even need a bio unless you wanna fill it out for shits and giggles. Guys do not read that shit when they swipe on you (unless you’re on a sugaring site..they read it there funny enough). You’re lucky if they bother reading it prior to messaging you on regular OLD.

As Zookeeper pointed out, OLD truly is a cesspool. The amount of LVM is insane that it’s discouraging. But remember that it’s not you, it really is the shitty cesspool that will tire you of this game haha. Good luck!
