After a year of breaking up with my ex LVM and doing a lot of soul searching, I realised that part of the reasons I was a huge pickmeisha is that I am a highly sensitive person. Whilst I consider it one of my assets (i.e., females friends have complimented me on how good I am at listening and making them feel at ease), my sensitivity and empathy makes me susceptible to LVM's BS. Since I have high self-awareness and am very attuned to people's emotions without necessarily going through the same experiences or traumas, when my LV ex sobbed in front of me admitting his infidelity because he was lonely, instead of leaving him I decided to give him a second chance, because I know too well how much loneliness hurts. Then I found out his LV behaviours are due to a combination of his dysfunctional family environment that is eerily similar to mine (maybe that's why people said broken people attract each other) and other traumas, which further taps into my empathic nature. Luckily though, despite some obvious pick-me behaviours I was still capable of common senses, such as not trying to be his mother or therapist. In the end we broke up for good, because I realised he was never going to change. I don't need FDS to tell me how much of a clown I was for investing a vast amount of emotional labour in this relationship and way more than he ever did. Whilst I appreciate the infos on LVM's perspective and strategies in this subreddit, I don't feel I have the necessary tools to translate my understanding of these strategies into actions. I hope I am not coming across as condescending here, but unless you are an empath you won't understand how difficult it is to turn off the mirror neuron system in your brain (which is responsible for compassion). Just like how it isn't effective to rationalise depression or tell a depressed person to cheer up, telling an empath to stop caring and try to be ruthless does not work for me. Of course I do not care for everyone and their mothers, but as soon as I caught feels (and I rarely catch feels) it is really really difficult to just shrug off and move on to another relationship.

I wonder if our relationship was actually trauma bond? FYI he wasn't abusive and I don't think our relationship was toxic -- it's just that he's a slob and makes supper low effort in almost everything we can do together.

How do I retain the gift of empathy whilst not letting myself be taken for granted by LVM?
