Exactly what the other posters said. It’s a huge sign of...”I have a lot of baggage I haven’t dealt with because I’m emotionally inept and I expect to use you as a therapist and sounding board while leading you on into thinking I am in any way shape or form emotionally available to you”. -at least in my case. I was too insecure and desperate for anyone to love me that I ignored the glaring red flags being thrown at me like daggers.

When I am working through a break up, I make sure not to date because I’m just not ready and the last thing I want is to drag all of my bullshit into something new and dump it all over someone else’s head. But it takes loads of insight, self-reflection, and maturity to recognize that. I can’t imagine how unattractive I would be if I was on a date with someone new and constantly brought up my ex. Clearly, I wouldn’t be over it if I did. And I’m not doing any favors to my new potential partner.

Unfortunately, it’s up to your date to realize this is happening and not make excuses for you and set you free to work through (or not) all of your issues. Because they will just end up getting hurt as you are in no real position to form anything genuine with anyone if you are still carrying a torch for an ex.

It’s unhealthy and beyond selfish.
