Ok so my husband, which I will shorten to H, has a coworker, we'll refer to him as D, that is such a nuisance that I, who doesn't even work there, am pissed off by him.
D started off pretty ok. He was better than the previous guy who had his position (aka he did more than just show up on time). But, at some point, he started getting belligerent. It started with him being 5-15 mins late every. Single. Day. Not too bad, all things considered.
But then D started making snide remarks to H. It started with D not getting along with literally anyone but H and the only female manager (C if I bring her up again). He had big issues with the store manager (M if I bring him up again) and the second in command (G if I bring him up again). Everyone suggested he should ask out the delivery girl, who had a lot in common with him, and suddenly he hated everyone.
One day, H let's everyone know he's taking out the trash (he's recognized by everyone as being the best and most hard working employee there), and D shouts "not including yourself, right?" And everyone just stared at D like "what the heck?" ... at this point H has been doing quite a bit of D's job because D was dropping the ball. Hard.
Everyone brushes it off... but not long after he asked H about the cheese in the front line, and how many bags he grabbed. H says he only grabbed one and D starts saying "Weeell we need two in there because I think night shift is gonna get real busy!" And H was like "D, remember G told us not to do that because the cooling system has been faulty lately, and if it goes out we have to throw away all the cheese in there." And D argued with that. H finally said "D we are going to do what G told me to do, NOT what you tell me to do."
Later on, D makes the same joke about H being trash.
For context: H makes ALL OF THE DOUGH for this pizza spot. Fresh. Every. Single. Day. On top of that, he is the opening manager and does the work of literally 5 regular workers (the store is severely understaffed, so there are only about 3 or 4 workers there at a time when under normal conditions there would be more), and just recently day time sales surpassed evening sales by a large margin. H gets to work early and preps all the stuff he needs to make dough before clocking in, counting it as his break time, and rarely takes a break after clocking in that goes over 10 mins. Safe to say H is an invaluable worker to them and they will do almost anything to keep him there. D is literally the only person who doesn't agree.
Then D started dropping the ball in a big way. Not only was he still late every day, he started putting pizzas together at a snail's pace. He started standing and leaning around, eating on the job, not calling new orders back when the front line calls them back to him (which is REQUIRED so they know D knows what he needs to make), complaining constantly, being on his phone often and then going back to the make line WITHOUT WASHING HIS NASTY ASS HANDS... and on top of ALL THAT... he was leaving shit all over the goddamned toilet. And leaving it for OTHER WORKERS to clean up! Refusing to clean it up himself, and claiming it was "because I'm fat."
Like... Jesus fucking christ on a trike D, I'M BIGGER THAN HIM AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WIPING ALL THE SHIT OFF MY ASS. H is about the same size as the dude and he doesn't have a problem wiping his ass either. And if we ever do accidently mess the toilet, WE CLEAN IT UP LIKE FUCKING ADULTS.
And the cherry on this horrible cake? When talk of G going to a different store circulated, D acted like he himself would be put in Gs position. Let that sink in. The guy who can't show up on time, has big trouble doing his job, and can't even wipe his ass proper... thinks he would be put in charge OVER H who practically does all the work of 5 men solo, is early every day, and gives 200% effort to his work.
And if that wasn't bad enough, D is constantly trying to play manager to H and C. Yesterday, a woman called and asked for Canadian bacon on her pizza. H asked her if ham was ok because they don't have Canadian bacon. She confirmed. But D argued that ham isn't the same as Canadian bacon. When she arrived to pick up the pizza, D volunteered to bring it out to her. He goes out, and a while later comes back WITH THE PIZZA and brings it behind the counter, demanding that they make her a pepperoni sausage pizza for the same price as the single topping ham pizza.
H tells him that
1 . If a pizza leaves the store, it should NEVER cross back to behind the counter. Because pandemic. D argued that the customer never touched it.
2 . D should never deal with a difficult customer himself. He should get ONE OF HIS MANAGERS to handle it. (D argued with that one too).
3 . That D has no authority to give out special deals, offer a different/remake the pizza, or to order HIS MANAGERS to do anything. Because the only other workers there were H and C.
Now, I know I often talk badly of H, but if there is one thing he is great at, it's being a hard worker who does his absolute best and does everything by the book. And this guy somehow thinks he's a better fit for management? PUH-LEAZ.
And furthermore, D backtalks M worst of all because M is D's magic the gathering buddy. And often D spaces out at work. He'll stare at a wall for over an hour if no one tells him to get back to work.
Now, he does say he is autistic and is on meds but... if it's this bad you shouldn't be working. He lives with his dad, and his dad pays for all his shit. So... why is he working? Probably for "pocket change" to fuel his MTG and video game addiction.
And I get how hard it can be sometimes. I have severe untreated ADHD, high possibility of having autism on top of that, and it's so severe that some days I can't function properly. But I'm self aware enough to know I should not try to get a regular job until I'm more stable.
So.. I have a theory. D zoning out is him daydreaming and disassociating. He's a big fan of anime and video games, so his daydreams consist of him seeing himself as a highly skilled hero while everyone else, especially H, is seen as being below him. He sees himself as the main character of an anime with plot armor. And these daydreams are so vivid that his brain is actually convinced that his daydreams are real.
I came up with this because when my adhd symptoms are at their worst, I experience a similar phenomenon. My brain convincing me I'm doing more than I am when all that's really happening is I'm thinking really hard about working really hard.
I personally believe that if you are aware you have any sort of mental condition, and it's so bad that you can't work properly, that you should work to improve yourself before getting back into the workforce. D is literally about to be fired because of his attitude shift and poor personal hygiene. They can't afford to have any customers getting sick just because this guy won't wash his hands often, leave his phone alone, or even wipe his butt properly.
I met the guy once. And he seemed to be trying to flirt with me until I asked for H. And I was so uncomfortable. I had pulled up to the drive through in H's car because 3 yo son was in a panic and wanted to see dad really badly, and H had walked to work that day.
