I needed to see this today. You are right, and studies have been done to show this is the case. They may move on but the deep seated behaviors will remain and resurface. Ultimately people don't change, they get better at masking when it's a deep personality flaw. Or....they try a different strategy...

What they will do is ADJUST their "type" or target to get a desired result. Say they tended to chase a specific type, a driven woman who is successful...but it fails time and again for them. These women don't tolerate his bullshit. Instead of working on himself, he may shift to looking for a woman with poor self image or esteem because he knows she will be more compliant and accepting of his behaviors for longer, if not forever. She doesn't feel she can do better and stays once his veil of lovebomb level attention drops and the nitpicking, negging and emotional/verbal abuse begins.

Instead of changing himself and his behavior, he changes his target to fit and be compliant. This is how a toxic man "settles" down.
