I recently posted here for support. (Thank you so much to everyone here!!!) I've been reflecting on my former relationship with the help of my therapist. One huge thing I've realized is that I never should've given my ex a second chance. Over the course of the 1.5 year relationship, he lied to me multiple times. 3 of those lies were him saying he was one place while he was actually with his ex wife. A fourth one of his lies involved him lying to me about giving his ex wife extra money. These are just the confirmed lies I know of regarding his ex wife. So who knows what he didn't get caught doing. Reflecting back, I now realize that after his first lie about his ex wife, that should've been it. No second chances. (PS there was never any confirmed cheating and I'm not sure if I even think he did cheat with her, but obviously his behavior made him look very shady, and the lying was bad enough in and of itself.) Anyway, I've expressed this sentiment to two people, a friend (who I consider intelligent and value her opinion) and my therapist. I've been disappointed by both of their responses. First, my therapist said that no one is perfect and that it's okay to give second chances. Then my friend said that lies can be worked through and how sad would it be if she just walked away from her husband for lying about their finances after one lie? I was feeling empowered by my realization, and then I was feeling like I was put almost into a defensive position. Every time I've given second chances, I've regretted it. What do you ladies make of this? With my friend, her husband has an extensive history of lying to her but they always "work through it." Obviously I don't know my therapist's personal life, but she knows mine. She knows the specifics of the situation, so I was surprised by her response. What are your thoughts?
