The problems is that girls grew up listening to that type of song, just like Disney movies and other pathetic love stories that will never happen in real life, that “love conquers all” etc etc

I always enjoyed the "18 years later" response by the woman that the song was about. here

My story ended with a Ph.D. in astrophysics and the support of a loving non-nuclear family. Not that anyone ever asked.

I was 18 or 19 when it came out; could definitely feel what ended up being later called (by Red Dorks) "Dread Game" from that song. Awful, plus gets stuck in your head.

Yeah, this song, and the song “girlfriend” seem extremely pick me. I do believe she was fairly young (17?) when she started her professional music career so it’s possible she was just a kid when she wrote that song and has since matured, or that it’s the label wanting her to project a certain image and she doesn’t hold those beliefs herself. Of course that doesn’t change the message that gets sent to her fans.
I remember as a kid my dad made a big deal of showing me her music and videos to be like “here’s a woman who’s talented and isn’t taking her clothes off so she must be a good influence” but honestly those pick me messages in songs (not just hers) are still harmful for young girls to internalize, just in a different way than the overly sexualized content.

Oh the not taking her clothes off is why I liked her as well! She was the only one watchable on MTV what young. The rest were much much older and honestly felt like boring aunties to me. Now that I listen to the lyrics again I can't believe how dumb they are.

I feel that. Honestly most of the music I listened to when i was like 12-14 is like if I heard it today for the first time, I wouldn’t like it because of the lyrics, but at the time I related to it on a deep emotional level. I guess that’s just a part of growing back, to look back at our younger selves and kind of cringe a bit.
