Probably unpopular opinion, but - I think the fact that to him, this is essentially a “teaching moment” for the kids is what makes this not weird and maybe commendable. I think it would be kind of weird if he gave her these gifts from HIM. Because that shows he may have some ulterior motive with her that transgresses the boundaries of divorce (imagine if his ex was dating someone).

Maybe she divorced him and he is trying to do stuff like this to get back into her pants? I don't know. Maybe I'm just a cynic. I don't like the way he makes a song and dance about what he's done. Why not just do it and not post about it on social media? I'm a bit suspicious lol.

I used to be a stepmom, and I don't like this at all. Both parents should make effort to be civil, understanding and kind towards one another, but this sort of thing crosses a boundary for me. There's a big difference between being on good terms and going out of your way to make someone breakfast on their birthday.

The biggest problem with this sort of behavior is that it starts to cause problems when new partners are added to the mix. If either parent is in a serious relationship and the new partner doesn't want this unnecessary tradition to continue, they suddenly become the unreasonable bad guy/gal. Kids may also be more reluctant to accept new partners if their parents do "couple" things for one another, giving hope of reconciliation. This is the kind of thing that seems all cute when both people are single but goes downhill fast when someone gets a partner. More often than not, these sort of situations result in new partners being treated poorly in favor of the other parent.

He's doing it right. Kudos to this man but this should be standard and not a wonderful exception. Men being proper examples to their children sadly is so few and far in between, it's shameful.
