This is a "hook" that they use to dangle in front of desperate women, "pick me" girls, and women who don't know any better/are inexperienced and then what they also don't tell you is that the treatment typically goes downhill from there. If he was being nice to you and calling first, that's going to taper off and trickle into a full stop and cold, aloof demeanor.

These men need to learn that we don't owe them sex. He can go cry about the money he spent on a meal all he wants without his entitled ass not being rewarded with sex for making the bare minimum. Also be aware of men that get mad about spending some money on a date (even if just a little money)... it's a red flag on how he deals with money and relationships. Only bitter cheapstakes get mad about spending some money on a date.

Unpopular opinion: when I was using a dating website, I'd always suggest drink dates. You get to meet IRL and see if there's any chemistry, without having to spend an hour plus. Not feeling it? Only 15 minutes spent.

My time (and uncomforability) is worth more than a free meal.

Second date is a different story.

I am a male and there is nothing wrong with taking a women out. The date should be planned to do an activity that you both enjoy. Followed by a romantic dinner with a nice bottle of wine. If sex happens great, if not still great. The point of a date is to get to know eachother and to find out if you are both compatible. Unfortunately, not all men get this.
