There's big parties where you will meet every person, and say goodbye to every person. Grandma is very important, they will probably teach you Spanish...they're very nice, and make amazing food!

if you want to see if the relationship could have any longevity i would try see if he’s dated outside of his race before or if his siblings or parents have/currently are and then see what the family reaction is to those relationships. imo the more the family is used to the idea of interracial dating, the more likely it is the relationship will last bc family is always the biggest “hurdle”. other than that, be respectfully curious of his culture and take this as a fun learning opportunity you can gain something from no matter how the relationship goes. source: daughter of an interracial couple who’s only been in interracial relationships

Watch how he treats you and other women. There’s machismo culture but there’s also a high standard for general politeness toward women. Not Hispanic, but the Hispanic men I’ve dated have been old fashioned and they should make an effort to walk you home if you’re out, cook for you, pay for you, and make a big show of being romantic. Now, this should be the bare minimum standard so don’t get too impressed and remember that the romantic thing can often be a front. They have all kinds of sweet words but I’ve realized, that those sweet words have been used for many women and that romance is a culture and not always tailored to you.

I'm doing things the other way around: I'm a Hispanic woman dating a white guy, and we have a pretty great thing going together, so I think I might be a good source of info for this. In terms of interracial dating, I think it's important to have boundaries on what kind of comments you aren't okay with. Everyone is entitled to their own sense of humor but if he makes jokes about white "girls," and being "basic" and those bother you, then nip it in the bud.

If either of your families are not 100% behind it, it would save you both a ton of heartache and move on, unfortunately. There will come a time where you have to choose between each other and your family, and that's not fair to you.

Your boyfriend should never feel embarrassed or ashamed of you ever, not even jokingly. Depending on how strong his cultural background is, it is very likely that as a white person, you may be unfamiliar with some of his and his family's customs just from lack of exposure. He should never feel embarrassed to bring you around his circles because of this.

Also, you should never feel like you have to put up with any type of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. disguised as cultural differences. I don't care where in the world someone is from, any cultural aspect that accepts any of the -isms and -phobias is not a tradition worth upholding or respecting. It's more a part of the older generations, but every so often you do find some young people perpetuating some toxic, outdated worldviews.

At the end of the day, an interracial relationship requires a bit more communication than usual, mostly about discussing boundaries, expectations, and clarification about some of your differences. It's incredibly fun to do all the stereotypical white people things I didn't do while growing up, like hot yoga and froyo and apple picking, and it's also fun sharing stuff from my culture with him like food and dancing and some Spanish. Be open to learning more from each other without accepting anything that makes either of you uncomfortable just for the sake of "tolerance."

Try all the delicious foods! Learn some basic facts about the specific country he’s from. Learn some basic conversational Spanish if you want :) if it gets serious, you’ll want to understand what he and his family are saying haha.
