No girl, you’re not. You want commitment, you want a socially recognized partnership, you want a husband, you want MARRIAGE. Your boyfriend DOES NOT. This is so sad. Either he says “no” and she’s stuck in a permanent holding pattern because she won’t dump him, or he says “yes” and she’s talking about her “fiancé” 3 more years from now.

The laws differ by state, but in my state, spouses have many protections that “partners” do not share. (I realize there are non-marital relationships where people DO feel as committed as if they are married, but I am referring to the legal / financial aspects. I am not a lawyer but worked with financial and estate planning):

1) You are not allowed to disinherit your spouse; they are entitled to a certain % of your estate. If you are only a “partner” your other half can re-write their will at any time and leave you nothing unless it is jointly held.

2) A spouse must sign off on any property sales if they spent one night post-marriage in the property while it was owned by the other spouse. This does not apply to partners.

3) A spouse must sign off if the beneficiary of a retirement account is anyone other than that spouse. Rule does not apply for partners.

4) In my state, there is a inheritance tax on non-joint assets of up to 10%. Spouses, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, and parents are exempt from the tax. “Partners” are not.

So many people are misled into believing that paperwork (wills, directives) can protect you, but those protections are limited unless you are married. They can be changed at any time, after years of togetherness.
