trollx, pretty cool subreddit, has revealed to me how shitty most men are

Yeah that's called sexism, trollx is an extremely sexist echo chamber, and their posters overlap a lot with r/pinkpillfeminism.

Imagine the reaction if someone posted there "mgtow, pretty cool subreddit, has revealed to me how shitty most women are".

SMH.

Let's summarize it like this: Those men who are already regarded as attractive and desirable do not really need dating advice. If you are not one of them but still seek love, then you are "trying too hard", which easily makes you appear creepy.

[–]LacklustreFriend 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Remember the rules:

  1. Be attractive
  2. Don't be unattractive

And you're good to go!

Ah yes, dating in this new world!

The post was pretty sad actually, while I liked the idea the guy was interested in trying to get a feel for what many women go through to up his chances of success. The only thing it really did is lower his self esteem, cast him in a negative light and enforce sexist standards wrapped up in guilt and shame.

What really gets me, is all those issues brought up about trying to find someone who shares your hobbies, or through friends or whatnot. It's the guy who must approach in all of those scenarios. I don't think many women fully understand that what they hate the most about men approaching them is due to the fact that men HAVE to approach them.

Lets say a woman is walking down the street and sees a guy she thinks is cute. She will walk by, she wont approach him and ask him out, therefore although she was interested its socially not her place to ask him out.

So now some guy she might not find so attractive approaches her on the street and asks her out. This, is unacceptable and makes her automatically defensive. Why did he bother her? Why did he think he had the right to take up her time? Why does he feel entitled to that time and energy when she's just trying to get where she is going?

Make no mistake, the reason she didn't approach the guy she thought was attractive was not for the reasons she is upset that a man approached her. She didn't approach him for 2 reasons, the first is fear of rejection (obvious one). The second is because for her she is not supposed to approach men, they are supposed to pursue her.

The cards are stacked against men in the dating world for many reasons. This however is the one that leads to so many issues in our society though. Women are complaining about men who hit on them at the wrong time. Or men who feel they are freindzoned or men who are too aggressive when approaching them. Yet the reason those things happen is because men are expected to pursue women, it's expected of them to show they are interested in a woman.

So women have 2 double edged swords they must contend with. The first is they want men to pursue them, but at the cost of all that drama that can bring when done. The second one is that they complain about all the drama and want men to stop doing that stuff but then men will stop pursuing them.

Whats easier, teaching men all the nuance in the world so they can formulate the exact moment to ask a woman out? Or women taking more chances and asking men out more and making the first move? I just have to say, knowing what woman is interested in you or "wants" to be approached by you is extremely difficult. Yet them putting themselves out their and risking rejection is a lot easier.

The pay gap? What about the rejection gap?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

You are right. The problem as I see it is a tragedy of the commons / prisoner's dilemma situation.

If enough men stopped approaching (or at least approached at a much lesser rate), then things might balance themselves out, women might feel safer and feel more emboldened or more of a need to approach etc. Yet if an individual man does this while the rest just keeps approaching, he is shooting himself in the foot (that he isn't getting in the door).

On the other hand, if women collectively decided to start approaching men, men wouldn't feel the need to "pester" women (aka approach them while not knowing if the stars are perfectly aligned etc.) However, if one individual woman makes that decision while other women just keep not approaching, she opens herself up to all the bad things that men have to face: rejection, misreading someone etc. while men will still continue to approach her at inopportune times. Meanwhile, her sisters will continue to follow the same old strategy of throwing out ambiguous signals that offer plausible deniability and pick the men who appropriately pick up on it.

Why isn't there some male dating strategy sub that lies in some reasonable ground between TRP and this BP chivalry/m'lady bullshit?

[–]SamHanes10 23 points24 points25 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Probably because anything that isn't BP chivalry/m'lady bullshit is called misogynist by people such as feminists. Therefore, only subs that don't care about these accusations, such as TRP, or completely capitulate to feminists, survive.

[–]mtcapri 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I guess I just don't really understand what's so objectionable to feminists about a comment like, "Just approach a woman casually and if she freaks out, back off and be glad you dodged a bullet. Some women are unfortunately paranoid about being approached by men, and you're best off staying as far away from them as possible." None of that is sexist, and you actually have to be pretty sexist to take offense to the bit about "some women."

[–]thereslcjg2000left-wing male advocate 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I’ve noticed that some (I’m not saying all) feminists seem to be really upset by any critiques of women’s thoughts and/or actions. I’ve seen them getting after anyone who says that “cool” girls are often toxic, for instance (that’s misogyny apparently?)

[–]mtcapri 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Some seem truly triggered by it, but others seem like they just don't like seeing that become the focus of any conversation. The times I've seen feminists truly okay with generalized criticisms of women of the same variety they often have no problem leveling at men are so rare I can't actually recall having ever witnessed an example of it.

[–]magus678 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In an explicitly left leaning sub I'm a little surprised I haven't seen anyone talk about the parallels but women essentially treat any attempt on the part of men to "unionize" socially as harshly as any Fortune 500. Men's dating strategy is roughly analogous to talk about your pay with your co-workers.

[–]mtcapri 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's an interesting analogy. Now that I think about it, you're right. Feminists come down harshly on any men's issues group on campus that isn't directly under their control (rendering it largely useless).

[–]webernicke 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you look at dating in economic terms, a lot of women's behavior can be classed as somewhat of a cartel, and women themselves as ruthless capitalists.

[–]LeJacquelope 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If actual cartels were as hard core cartel-ish as women are, we would be a global hard core corporate state by now.

[–]SamHanes10 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My comment was probably a bit of a cynical exaggeration, but I think there is at least some truth to it.

I guess I just don't really understand what's so objectionable to feminists about a comment like, "Just approach a woman casually and if she freaks out, back off and be glad you dodged a bullet. Some women are unfortunately paranoid about being approached by men, and you're best off staying as far away from them as possible."

I think there are two aspects that answer this. The first is that most feminists insist that the female must be the focus of any interaction between men and women. In your example, the focus was on the man, rather than the woman. A focus on the woman would be how the poor woman has to endure countless unwanted advances. This leads to the "BP chivalry/m'lady bullshit" where the focus is entirely on making sure the women and her feelings are prioritised at all times. This is the reason why many feminists find such talk objectionable.

The second aspect is why do feminists react so harshly to any such comments. One might think, "okay, so the woman isn't the focus of the conversation, I can understand why they don't like that, but isn't calling it misogynistic a bit extreme?" In my view, the answer to this is the mechanism by which feminism operates and propagates. Specifically, feminists often uses emotionally manipulative strategies to achieve their aims (as a side note, I believe this is an extension of the fact the it is a predominantly female movement, and thus I think its proponents use tactics that are generally favoured by women). Exaggerated accusations of misogyny and women-hating are very much in line with such tactics.

Thus, I think for 'reasonable' dating advice for men to survive, I do think it needs to be able to ignore criticism from feminists, since the above points suggest that such criticism may be in bad faith. I don't think such a forum would necessarily have to be like TRP (i.e. caring very little about women), but I think any concern for women shown in such a forum has to be rational and based on what's fair to everyone, rather than focused on what feminists advocate.

[–]mtcapri 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The first is that most feminists insist that the female must be the focus of any interaction between men and women.

That's some good analysis. I agree that's most likely what's going on. I don't like the term, but "gynocentricism" certainly applies here.

I'm not convinced by this argument though. Reason being, while I agree women tend to use more emotional manipulation on average than men, the data I've seen on this as well as my personal observations only apply on the individual level. Extrapolating that trend to how groups of women debate politically is unjustified, particularly when you can easily see other political groups engaging in the same strategies.

As an alternative explanation, I would argue that feminists tend to construe non-gynocentric things as misogyny, because they've been trained to see the world through the lens of patriarchy, meaning they have a bias for seeing neutral scenarios as male-centered ones, because the assumption that the world is male-centered is at the heart of their worldview.

I agree, but what I meant when I said I don't understand why this is objectionable to feminists is that I have a hard time understanding why feminists continue to exhibit the biases they do, even as they (I think earnestly) claim to value male and female perspectives equally. The only way I can explain it is to chalk it up to severe empathic bias, but it's so prevalent that I have a hard time believing the entire group could share such a bias. I don't have much faith in people to manage their biases, but I see more ability in society in general than I do in feminists. Their bias seems particularly palpable, and I don't really understand why that's the case.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

I think dating advice is a tough one because the nature of the issues can be very different depending on who you are, where you live, what your exact situation is etc. Mainstream /r/dating_advice mostly consists of bullshit platitudes that probably only work for people who have already more or less gotten their shit together

This post is one of the few examples I've seen on Reddit of dating advice for men that I'd consider to be in the "Goldilocks" zone. Mind you, this is advice directed at the "hopeless"/awkward/shy/inexperienced guy, so certainly not appropriate for everyone. However, what with the incel "epidemic" we're seeing, and on the other hand BluePill/feminist advice that centers the woman and often seems to assume the guy to be a closet misogynist, it's refreshing to see someone give non-platitudinous, non-sociopathic advice that centers the man and also encourages him to approach, flirt and put himself out there.

[–]mtcapri 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for the link, but it's not particularly surprising, given that it came from a frequent user of this sub. What's infuriating is that this isn't the norm for dating advice for men.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Actually, /u/Forgetaboutthelonely copied it from /u/pm_me_goat_gifs , on /r/socialskills. And for full disclosure, originally this comment was a response to a post I made on /r/socialskills (under a previous account that I deleted). It might surprise you that /u/pm_me_goat_gifs is a /r/MensLib user

[–]mtcapri 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Ah, thanks for the correction. Yeah, that does surprise me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I really appreciated the effort he put into that response! That, and the fact that it wasn't either a laundry list of places where you are not allowed to hit on women, or a jargon-filled guide on how to demonstrate your emotional unavailability

[–]mtcapri 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree, it was a refreshing take on the subject. I wish that was the norm for what I see on /r/menslib, but sadly, I generally tend to see a lot of prioritization of women's interests in their discussions of men's issues that affect women. Their philosophy seems to be, "advocate for men up to the point at which women might be negatively affected."

This is a nice exception, but I wish it were the rule there.

[–]joeclark5 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Middle ground is hard to find anywhere on Reddit.

[–]LeJacquelope 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Because those of us who feel we know a better way just don't have the time to moderate such a forum.

[–]mtcapri 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Hold my beer.

[–]LeJacquelope 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You brave soul. No sarcasm there. That takes real guts and determination to manage a subreddit.

Someone needs to also talk about how men need to tame their thirst and abandon this spread-your-seed mindset. Also, as a part of that, men should judge women more by moral character and compatibility in sense of humor, lifestyle and values, above looks. Such a strategy will almost instantly weed out the FDS types and the hypergamic women. IMHO male thirst and obsession over women's looks contributes to half of the hypergamy problem - the other half being what women contribute, but men can at least cut their misery by half by changing how they behave.

That would be a totally different subreddit. But it would link very well to yours.

[–]mtcapri 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's all kosher. This new sub is meant to be as inclusive as possible, while still maintaining a focus on discussion of egalitarian principles in relationships.
