Question: is a "gender gap" problematic if it occurs naturally, due to letting people select their own occupations? (Assuming that there are actually no unfair/sexust deterrents at play, of course.)

According to that research, no: the women found nothing problematic about inherent preferences of the sexes determining career paths.

It's almost as if filling people's head with "everything is sexist" makes them perceive everything as a result of sexism...

Honestly, who here had any doubt that society perceive sex difference as problematic only when women are affected?

Great study, it feels to me as confirmation bias because this is what I already believe. But I hope it's good research

I didn't find that article to be particularly informative. The results pretty much demonstrate the obvious which we already know:

1) Women are more concerned than men are about low-female/high-male disparities. This will generally be true for any group disparities.

2) Women are more likely to think sexism/discrimination is involved AND they are more supportive of affirmative action. Note: this is true in all cases for both male- AND female-dominated jobs.

3) Both men AND women view sexism as a contributing factor for low-female disparities much more than the low-male disparities.

None of this is all that surprising. If anything, I think it shows men's and women's views are generally somewhat aligned but differ by degree.

I disliked that the authors were heavy-handed with their bias that sex differences have strong biological underpinnings and that claims of discrimination are overstated. Like, sure, maybe that's true, but you need to let the reader form their own conclusions rather than making it sound like the authors are setting out to prove a point. I prefer researchers to be more neutral and objective rather than having a strong motivation in any particular direction. There's a buttload of bad shoddy research out there done by biased people so it's important to work hard toward staying objective.

I’ve read Reeves’ analysis of the HEAL professions and I definitely agree with his points
