I think it's because we don't really feel like we can share like that anywhere so when we find a welcoming place our instinct is to air out our grievances. But yea, not what this sub is for.

Yeah, normally I'm not too concerned on other subs because someone will post something that is a troll post on a shitposting sub and then everyone gets completely anal about what constitutes a shit post or a troll post.

But on social justice oriented subs, if it just turn into a collection of horrible comments, that doesn't help people as much as it creates false consensus, which generally exacerbates the issue.

Out of 8 billion people, if 0.1% of the population likes licking doorknobs, and each of them posts 1 post about licking doorknobs, then a sub pops up that collects all the posts about people licking doorknobs, you will have 8 million posts every year. So if you hang out on that sub, it will feel like basically everyone on the planet is completely obsessed with doorknob licking.

So then when someone comes over, they might be confused as to why all of your doorknobs are connected directly to mains power.

The same thing happens with people I know who are like "We can't go out at night. That's a good way to get yourself killed." When the likelihood is absurdly low. Then they suggest "I'm just going to stay in and binge my true crime shows some more" and suddenly it all makes sense.

Something similar happened with my cousin, a woman going into engineering. She said in one of her core curriculum classes, they talked about sexism and said something like "Engineering is a sexist institution. They will not respect you. They will not listen to you. They will not take you seriously. That's why women don't go into engineering."

Then she actually got into engineering and received overwhelming support. She has some good leadership qualities and this led to her becoming a team lead. Before I knew all of this, I said something to the effect of "women might feel discouraged from going into engineering. Which is a shame, because it would be something we would have in common." And this cousin stepped in from the other room like "Yeah? Discouraged by who?" and she told me about all of this.

Guilty! But yeah it’s only because it feels like this is the only place on the site people “get it.” A lot of men’s rights subs are right leaning and say some bigoted shit.

Quick suggestion: maybe we could have a day for it? Or a mega thread?
