A lot is made of the sentencing disparity when it comes race ( rightly so). We know that Black people are more likely to incarcerated even if they commit the same crime as white people and are more likely to be sentenced to death than white murderers. The ACLU puts the racial sentencing gap at around 20%.

But what is not discussed is just how large the gender sentencing disparity is. Men receive 63% harsher prison sentences than women for committing the same crime even after controlling for extensive criminological, demographic, and socioeconomic variables. A study by the University of Georgia also found the same results.

In case of the death penalty, it's even worse. Women account for around 10-15% of all murderers yet since 1976 account for only 1% of all executions. A study in California found that juries recommend the death penalty 10.5% if the victim is a woman and only 1.5% if the victim is a man. So if you murder a man you are 7X times less likely to get the death penalty than if you had murdered a woman.

It's baffling to me how this glaring discrimination against men in the criminal justice system is not all discussed. There's a lot of discussion of racism and when it's about sexism, it's about how women are treated badly. Which is true, women are treated badly but men are treated far worse.
