Imho this unfortunately not just happens in academia, but everywhere, though with less formal and official rules, where so-called 'progressive', 'artistic' or 'sustainable' people come together with an echo-chamber worldview (chasing people unnecessarily to the right). The article explains very well why Victorian morals, for all its narrow-mindedness, at least offered clarity where current morals don't, and I think the history of how this all came to be is described quite clear and accurate.
