I think you’ve got 2 choices:

1) Have kids in which case providing a home, saving for the future both yours and theirs and generally doing the whole adulting thing is pretty much essential.

2) Don’t have any kids (my choice, there’s 7 billion people in the world 1 mores not gonna make a difference) in which case your only responsible for yourself and can basically do what the fuck you want

A long time ago it was a thing to wish for. You went on your own, got married, got kids, you worked and enjoyed the fruits of it. Later you watched your children being more successful than you, and you were proud. You were proud of your achievements also. When you became old and frail, your kids were there to help you. That was the order of the day, cogs and grease of the rising civilization. Now, it's just like Ponzi scheme, you invest, but you lose everything. Cogs rust, grease is stale, civilization goes down the toilet.

Our culture has laid out for us a very specific life path, and if we step off of that path we are FUCKED socially.

Go to school (incur student debt) -> get a job -> get married (take on debt brought by your new wife) -> buy a house (incur mortgage debt) -> have kids (incur medical debt) -> hang yourself at 35 because you have no idea how you're ever going to pay for all this shit.

Many aspects of 'growing up are scams' - having to work 40 hours a week, or even 52 weeks a year. needing health insurance. needing new clothes vs used cloths.

When I was in the middle school, we had a 6 days schedule. It was pretty hard for me to handle, and up to this day I don't know what such important knowledge the school was giving to me to implement such a schedule.

So I used to complain about it to my parents and they, instead of, yknow, little sympathy, used to told me in a smug voice: "so what? we've been here too and done that! If you dont like it now, wait until you grow up and start working!" (and also implying me marrying too).

It was later that I discovered that pursuing women only brings me emptiness, humiliation and despair, that my parents didn't really achieve much in life beyond becoming adults, but this phrase above really stuck in my head.

I'm not going to make my life worse on purpose. I may have to fend for myself, to pay my own bills, but I'm not going to take extra burden, I can't blame anyone else for my life lived unhappily.

I've also read that many of the great men of society didn't actually "grow up." They remained child-like and fun, testing and trying new ideas and possibilities, because they could. growing up and becoming a "man" has now become a milestone set for people to jump through. But before, it meant to have your mind and body tooled on to take the world. Both the joker and warrior would want to be that type of man, and it wasn't seen as a unique milestone. The whole marriage and relationship part...that's the new angle that is trying to get itself jammed into the "man" category.

That's my take on it, but thanks for this. Helps me think my own thoughts when people ask questions.

It depends on what your definition of "growing up" is. IMO it's more about learning how to accept responsibility for your actions and realizing your actions can have consequences. You "grow up" and slowly learn that sometimes life isn't "fair" and that at some point you'll have to endure things that don't bring you immediate gratification.

The stuff you named are "society's" benchmarks for measuring "maturity", the things you're "supposed" to do to present the illusion of having "grown up" to the rest of the world. I know plenty of guys who have mortgages and good credit and kids and cars who are still immature little pricks who totally unravel whenever they're faced with challenges or setbacks.

Main thing is that we are thought that we arent complete untill we are married have a family. Allthough I wont deny the happiness childeren and a good family can bring it also bring heart ache and a constant pressure to provide and be consistent and strong. So even if there were almost no divorces and no divorce rapes ect, then still marriage and a family is nothing something to take lightly. When you add in the constant pressure of having to be consistent, then its already something some men wont sign up for. But nowadays with the family court system, the chance you lose your childeren or they are being used against you, and the possibility that you live in a lovesless marriage where you only stick around for the childeren and get nagged for everything, then I say fuck no. Rather earn a bit of money for myself spend it how I want (and you dont have to earn alot if spend wisley) and just enjoy life.

You don't have to do any thing besides supporting yourself. So, you need to "grow up" in the sense of working and paying rent on time. After that, though, every thing is a personal decision. You don't have to get married, you don't have to live in the suburbs with 2.5 kids, you don't have to pursue the career your parents envisioned, etc.

Adulthood absolutely is a scam. Its pretty shocking to find out that despite playing by the rules you were raised to believe to be truth, you end up in debt, hated and in a situation that you have zero legal or social control over that in fact is a lie to trap you into slavery. It is also further sand kicked into your face to see those who don't abide by social convention succeed in life. Milking welfare comfortably while you toil in slave labor under the government gun, beating women, partaking in crime, committing general evil acts etc. Those guys don't follow societies rules because although their behavior at first glance appears immoral, their way isn't a path into government sponsored slavery plantations. (Unless they get caught I guess then prison...but there are still legal ways to live outside the system.) Do what your gut tells you and learn from your realization. Never allow others to influence your decisions again.

On a slightly related side note as an example, look at the airline ground crewman who commandeered the airliner in Washington state. Look at the commentary between him and air traffic control. I believe his instance to be a reaction to this same realization.

I think that really depends a lot on how you define adulthood. Adulthood in the sense of being independent, having your own flat, your own job, your own money and be legally able to do what you want (within reason ofc) is awesome. Adulthood in the sense of becoming a slave to the wage and working to get attention (i.e.: Look at my nice house! Look at my great job!) not so much. Leaves you dry.

I mean sure the first option also comes with responsibilities, but the pros of being able to do your own thing outweigh those imo.

Yeah the man slaves away 40 to 70 hours a week to build up his castle with its massive home entertainment system, state of the art kitchen and bathrooms, does the cleaning, tidying, cooking and washing all to keep his princess happy in the hopes he'll get a bit of pussy by the end of the week. Not too long after the kids are born and the pussy totally dries up he then makes himself a man cave because the rest of his castle which he still gets the pleasure of paying for, maintaining and cleaning of course but without the pussy now belongs to the wife.
