See if you could get a job in construction as a general laborer. It'll really let you get a feel for all different trades. Thats where i started and i did electrical, framing, plumbing, painting, cabinetry, ground work, excavating, concrete, every major trade. I ended up getting really good at framing and interior finishing and i get paid pretty healthy for it. If nothing else, take a break. I took a year off from school to work and live a little and it was the best thing i ever did. Really reset my mentality, built up some cash, and got to do some real work

Just because you didn't get into your top choices doesn't mean you shouldn't go. It really depends on what you want out of life.

If I had it to do over again, I'd relocate to a city where I wanted to be, and tried to develop skills in a field that I thought I'd enjoy.

I'm an engineer and I have to say that I wish that I had more training in the skilled trades. It would give me a lot more perspective on how things actually are done "in the field". Plus it's a lot more satisfying and confidence inspiring knowing that you can actually build something with your own hands rather than just design it in CAD.

The problem for me when I was younger was I thought that if I tried the trades that I would be trapped there. Basically I thought that I would have followed the blue pill script and get married and wouldnt be able to continue with education because I would have family responsibilities so I decided to skip the trades and go straight to Engineering school.

As a MGTOW you dont have that problem. Your goal in life should be to be a master at your craft and derive satisfaction from it. You should want to tackle all aspects of your craft over your lifetime - trades, design, finance, leadership, etc.

I'd say pick the best opportunity you have available to you at the moment and don't worry about missing out right now. As a MGTOW you'll have the time and money to seek out opportunities later in life that are closed to men who chose to spend their productive years paying alimony and child support.

Though there's a lot of (justified) hate for college these days, it's still a great idea if you're a good fit and you do it right.

For instance, engineering with in-state tuition at a flagship state college (think Ohio State or Michigan or Nebraska or any, really) is probably the best bang for your buck. Even cheaper is doing your first two years at a community college and transferring, though that requires a bit of planning.

The problem is people who go to a mid or low tier private college, get a degree in the humanities or social sciences (besides economics) and do it all on loans.

Do you have other colleges that you haven't heard back from?

As far as the military, unless you really want to enlist, ROTC in college is going to be your best bet.

And if your goal is to be an engineer, and you can swing college, do it. In a perfect world, engineers would do a one or two year apprenticeship as a technician in their major of choice, but the cost - benefit tradeoff isn't worth it in most cases.

Go to a cheaper college that doesn't even have to accept you. Commuter college = no to little student loan debt. They just did you a favor (unless your daddy is rich). Btw, I said commuter not community; there is a difference.

I notice that a lot of people here are recommending the trades. I don't think this is a bad idea, I actually agree with most of the recommendations not to go to college and learn a trade instead, but to have a different point of view, let me focus on the disadvantages of the trades:

Many of these jobs are very hard work that you will probably not be able to do till retirement.

Some guys in the trades are not the brightest, so you might lack intellectual stimulation.

Another problem are corrupt unions with strict rules. A friend was in a union where all of the advanced jobs involving computers went to old union members, who did not know how to use a PC, but they liked to sit down. He had to run around and do menial work all day.

On the other hand, if you are good at what you are doing and if you are smart enough to understand what customers want, this is a field where you can advance quickly. It is certainly much easier to become a foreman or supervisor than an engineering manager. In the trades, you can be running a construction site at an age when other kids are still in college, and make a lot more money than many of them will ever make.

If this is what you want to do, you have to learn how to manage people, do budgets, spreadsheets, plans etc. You'll have to learn this on your own (which is absolutely possible), but no one will force you to learn. You have to ask yourself what it takes to move in the direction you want to go, find yourself a mentor to guide you. All of this will be up to you. In college, you can postpone that decision for a few years and just let other people do the thinking for you.

To me, one of the biggest downside of the trades is the lack of formal education. In engineering, there is a ton of really interesting stuff to learn. Materials engineering, mathematics, programming, CAD, geoengineering etc. You say you have a good SAT score, so I assume you like learning. If you opt for the trades, there will be very little (book) learning and you will have to learn the advanced topics on your own. If you are driven enough, you can find all of this on edx, coursera and youtube, in much better quality than the classes you will attend in college, but you have to ask yourself if you can learn by yourself. Even if you learn by yourself, you won't get as nice a degree as from a college (which is the only reason colleges are still in business, a college is basically a place you pay so that you can use their name on your cv. many classes in college are pretty bad and not worth the money. not at all). Still, if you work in a trade and learn engineering on your own, if you like engineering that much, at some point you will ask yourself why you are not working as an engineer.

I suggest you to go to your public library and pick up a few textbooks for your chosen trade (Electrical Course for Apprentices and the like). Then compare to undergraduate engineering books and see what you like better. In the trades, the learning emphasis will not be on books. Ask yourself what you enjoy.

Talk to people in the trades and in engineering. Go to colleges and talk to the faculty. If you just walk through the engineering building, you'll probably find a few open doors. See if you like the atmosphere. Ask them what they like and what they hate.

You can also attend community college in the evening or study part time.

Overall, engineering is a great area. It is still the area where facts, not feelings, count. Unfortunately engineering is quickly being subverted by SJWs, so you have to pick a classical male engineering discipline. Something where people die when you make a mistake.

You are still very young, if you spend a year learning a trade and it is not for you, you can still go to college and will be ahead of your peers in maturity. It will be a valuable experience especially for an engineering job. There is nothing wrong working as a laborer for a year.

A third option is to study abroad. There are many countries where you can study for free or for far less than in the US (girls might be prettier and less obese, but they are just as dangerous). This could become an interesting experience by itself. Get your undergraduate degree there, and then go to grad school here and get a TA position to pay for your tuition. The basics are the same everywhere, but whenever laws and regulations are involved, engineering can be very country specific, so make sure your foreign degree will be accepted in the US.

If you look for a job, everyone will lie to you, just as you will lie in an interview. They will promise you the world, but once you start, things could be very different. Realize that you are young and naive and that some people might take advantage of you. Taking advantage of young and naive people is the business model of colleges. The military is probably no different.
Most jobs are not that great. There are very few people who will enjoy going to work every day of their life. Most people work because they need the money to pay for commitments they made, and because they have nothing else to live for or are afraid to step out of the system. Don't make that mistake. Don't make commitments (financial or personal) that tie you down and force you into slavery. Never put yourself in a situation where you cannot walk out any time. Don't make your job your reason to live, find something else you like.

The most important thing in your life are you. Your job is not to work to serve some girl, your job is to serve yourself. Live the life you want to live without hurting others too much, and find a job that can pay for your chosen lifestyle.

You can do 2 years at a local JC/CC and then transfer. Transfers have a much easier time getting accepted, and your diploma only shows the university you transferred to. Saves a ton of money too.

Also engineering is a pretty good choice, as long as you can math.

Airlines need skilled labor & they will send you to school. Heating & A/C people make fair money & they always in need of reliable help.

At 17, if you're not going into a STEM field, I highly recommend looking at a trade for a few reasons.

After you at least Journeyman in a trade, you will never be unemployed. You can take your trade anywhere you want to live. Water and electric have the same basic operating principles, master one and you'll have a good idea how the other works. Comfortable pay as you increase in skill. You'll never have to pay for a home repair if it's in your field. If the world ends, you'll be one of the last few people on earth with clean water and/or power.

Wouldn’t rule out college unless not going to your top choice was an absolute dealbreaker. Good academic performance is a tool you can use. In state public programs tend to be more helpful and generous

It would be an opportunity to get out of the house and focus on your craft.

What lifestyle do you want to have? Where do you want to live?

Do you want a lot of money or no? If money isn't a driving factor in your life, become a machinist. Get to do on the fly, light engineering, work with your hands, left to yourself in a male dominated environment. Most likely you can go to a community college locally while also starting sweeping floors at a local machine shop working your way onto the equipment. In the end you can make some decent money after many years.

If money is something that drives you, i would say go into the coast guard, figure out something that you want to go to college first and let them pay for it. Some sort of engineering field, engineering pays better and it's still very challenging.

Trade schools are good. Hvac or plumbing or welder could set you up for life. Will make more money than huge percentage of college grads and there is a freedom that money can't buy when you know how to use your hands and have a skilled trade.

You can go into a different univ (such as local / public / mid tier, etc.) and then make straight A's and be involved in something on campus, and after a year, apply to the better universities.

that's what I did, and it worked.

also, you don't even need university if you're willing to spend a year or two teaching yourself to program. I make 100k as a web developer, but studied liberal arts... no need to go to college though I enjoyed it.

Where were you trying to get in, Harvard? Look, you don't have to tell us, but if you have "good grades" there should be a decent college out there for you. I'd suggest following --Guardian--'s advice but honestly to make it far in engineering (and most fields) and get the proper money you need school, no doubt. The safest / solid plan is to go to the best school you can for engineering.

What kind of engineering depends on you, but if I could go back in time I'd shoot for computer science. The learning curve is high initially, but it will pay off in spades when you enter the working world.

If you have the head for STEM, do STEM. Unlike fuzzy degrees (the value of which HUGELY depends on which school grants them), a STEM degree is a STEM degree. The only thing that matters in STEM is - can you do the fucking work? Honestly, it's cheaper to do your first two years of college at a community college assuming the four-year college you're looking at will transfer all the credits. You'll have smaller class sizes and pay a fraction as much. Then you go to the four-year school, take only your major's courses, and get the same degree for a fraction of the price.

Pick your degree, look at the Princeton Review, apply to every college in the top 25 that you can afford. If you have good grades like you say, they shouldn't all reject you. Go to the cheapest one that accepts you.

Hey dude, if military is honestly an option for you, check out the navy nuke program. You have to test (semi) high on the asvab to get in, then it’s ~2 years of school that chugs dick, followed by 4 years of the worst job in the nav, but when you get out... Life has been nothing but opportunity since I got out. Many friends take the ME/EE/AE route with the credits/skills obtained from the nav, many, many others just go straight to good jobs. I’ve got no degree and currently making right at 100k in a field with nothing but growth in its future. AND if shit hits the bed I can always decide to pretend to be a person and go back to school with the GI bill. The Nuke program sucks dick, hard, but it’s worth it my dude.

I tell everyone not to go to college unless someone else is paying for it. Do not take on any debt to pay for education. Go to a community College and take your humanities, and extra curricular classes while learning some valuable skills. Welding, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, etc. Aircraft maintenance (my job) is pretty immune to a coming future of automation which is partly why I left a financial job to go back into it. Find one you like while going to community College, get your associates and a valuable skill even if it is a backup because diversification is very valuable.

Apply to a university with scholarships and transfer those previously mentioned bullshit classes to get your bachelor degree in the STEM field you want.

As a 10 year Air Force Veteran, I don't really advocate joining the military just to get the GI bill. Thousands of people did that 18-22 years ago and then 9/11 and Iraq round 2 happened and they were stuck doing something they never really thought they would have to do just to get their education paid for. Military leadership (at least in the AF) has gotten shittier in my opinion the last few years. Morale is low, OP's tempo is high, everyone is doing more with less. If that interests you or you are genuinely wanting to serve or be part of some really cool jobs (I flew 'drones' and did some really cool shit) then by all means join the military. But, don't join just to get your education as you are taking an unnecessary risk in my opinion.

My first boss was a high school drop out. Started an apprenticeship in hvac. Did the diploma after his apprenticeship finished. Started a small manufacturing company making air conditioning. Sold it to a larger company after 15 years for about 20mil.

If you got brains in a trade, you can do pretty good.

Wow, this reminds me of how I dropped out from oil engineering (top university in my country) because I realized it's the wrong major all along (never had any interest in engineering and hate physics with all my guts back on hs), but due to the pressure of my aunt and my mom, I just sorta "roll with it" and tried the entrance exam. Got accepted and that's the beginning of my miserable life, and depression and suicidal thought follows soon after. Thank god I'm out and now I just pursue different study altogether.

You could try to learn how to program with books. I was in a very similar situation when I was your age and I now do professional graphics programming (DirectX/OpenGL/Vulkan). If you can build a nice portfolio and know your basics, people will hire you on the spot. Really good money too (30-40+ an hour depending on the project). AI is taking off so I'd suggest investing your time there if you choose to do that. AI programmers can make up to 100+ an hour depending on experience, but it's like 70 on average I believe. Sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours is pretty annoying but you get used to it.

The world needs skilled workers, and the vast majority of skilled professionals did not go to top schools. Soon you'll see how much things like "university rankings" are total shit and schools offer the exact same curriculums if their programs are accredited.

Working manual labour sucks long-term, I did it for a couple years. Go to university, you won't regret it.

Tradeschool is an option as is a technical school. You could do that and later go back for an actual degree of you feel like it. The military is another option which will pay for your schooling via the g.i. bill. Just remember - by serving in this system's military you're fighting for gynocentrism among other things.
