I had an engagement ring from when I thought I wanted to marry a previous girlfriend. That didn't happen.

Fast forward 5 years and my then girlfriend asked me to marry her. I was a bit apprehensive but I said ok. I told her about the old ring, asked her what she thought about swapping out the stone, having it melted down and recast, and splitting the cost of upgrading that one and mine (carved titanium, 1/10th "appraised" value of hers). She agreed. She made more money than me. We also agreed on a much scaled down destination wedding from the grandiose monstrosity she wanted. I thought, ok, I can work with this woman. She's reasonable. This will work.

At the wedding she screamed at me because things weren't meeting her expectations. I would have called it off but she had gotten pregnant on purpose 2 months earlier. The marriage was doomed from the start. During one of the endless arguments the ring came up and she yelled:

"You're supposed to WANT to buy me a nice ring!!"

Fuck that shit. Any of you guys lurking who think you've found a unicorn, you haven't. I guarantee it.

At my schooling, tons of females often descend into a marital trance and often prompt and rush their boyfriends to get a ring, and in some cases a house, despite the fact that their pay grade couldn't provide a single building block to start the foundation. Some even have their boyfriends buying pointless pendants called "charms" to fill up their bracelet slots (little pieces of metal and diamond at $90 to $150 a pop) as a temporary substitute before they're expected to pop the question.

For some strange reason, I like to check my wallet and smile periodically while hearing about these scenarios.
