Been there. I lost my job after a political coup. It had nothing to do with my job performance. The very same day I lost that job, I was on my computer updating my resume and finding job leads, but my cunt of a girlfriend dumped me anyway. Yup I know that. When i moved back to my parents house at the end of my last semester of college and still looking for a job she left for another man. And I was dumbfounded but at the time of the break up. Red pill and MGTOW made it's way into my life before going into the blue pill despair. 3 months later I get my first freelance position and gigs start coming. I’m inclined to disagree. Both cases are generally a result of the same cause: the employee starts to give less and less about what they do because it’s too low paying compared to the effort involved.
I’ll be honest, the only reason why I would quit my job formally versus just straight “losing my job” is because referrals from the supervisor in my line of work matter and I need to feign to my next boss that I’m confident and ambitious

I was fired from a job while dating a women. She proceeded to break all the expensive things in the house. I left her there and left the house I was renting. I did this because I did not feel safe.

Just bought a gaming laptop & gaming monitor.
I have the option of meeting cute early 20s chicks in my town. I've even heard some of them call me cute under their breathe at cafes, and have them hit on me.
Why? I am early 30s, I dress classy, have a job, confident, and I don't need them.
Within two months of moving to this town, I've banged 4 different women. And after being around them and remembering how women are, although I want to bang the cute early 20s women... I'm a self taught developer, and I work remotely. Started learning programming about 7 years ago.
I even moved to a city with a lot of tech jobs at one point, just to get a better chance at landing a programming job & getting experience.
Just need the right skills.
I keep my living expenses low actually. I used to be homeless. Just now breaking through zero to having a few thousand dollars (and not in debt). So, assuming I can keep my job, I am looking forward to stacking cash. Just losing my interest in programming sadly. Corporate problems are boring as fuck.

didn't start learning web stuff until around age 25 or 26.
now early 30s, and just on my second job which requires programming.
these jobs are a dime a dozen if you have the skillset (web software engineering)
the good news is: you just need: to put in time & effort + have even a basic strategy (such as: create a portfolio of projects and open source your code) and you can get the results you want, as a self taught developer.

If you can't figure out how to learn something via the largest repository of free information (the internet), then I can't help ya. There are many articles online and on reddit about this exact topic. Google it. "How did you teach yourself to be a web developer or software engineer reddit" <-- see how I included the word reddit, so google will show me reddit specific result as well?
The magical key to learning everything you want to know: Look it up on Youtube, A search engine, or your local library. Find resources & download them to your brain. Yes, that's right: Sit down and read/watch, and take notes.
And then, improve your query based on whether or not the results (answers) satisfy you.
Your question is: How does one find resources? That is, Where are the resources to do <X> thing?
Reframe this into something easier and more illustrative to answer:
"Road map to learning <X> thing"
Replace <X> with a programming language you want to learn.
Which programming language, you ask? Well, a prog. lang is just a tool. it depends on what you want to build. it also depends on what pays well in the market place.
If you don't know how to teach yourself a topic, then you need to learn how to learn.
Learning a skill on your own involves very solid intention-- you must have the discipline to actively and intentionally learn-- such as by taking notes, keeping track of progress, building small things with what you learn, and repeating until the small things become medium size things.
How does a person learn anything?
They find resources
They learn theory
They apply what they learn by completing projects
Throughout, they intentionally learn by taking notes, reviewing concepts, discussing what they learn with others (such as in an IRC chatroom), and exposing themselves to new related ideas.
The more educated you become, the easier learning becomes. The easier finding resources becomes. It's all based on asking the right questions (to a search engine). To do that, you just need to "step into the river".

applications & websites (such as codeAcademy or Team Treehouse)

All depends on what you're looking for long-term. If your job has no growth prospects, it may be time to seek employment and other opportunities elsewhere.
It pays well and isn't that demanding. I value the money at this point. Also no state income tax is nice.
