Engaged and was with my ex for 10 years. The constant need to keep “improving” our situation is the real expense, and the constant “we need to do things...” Ofcourse the payment was mostly one sided.

“We don’t do anything on the weekend, let’s go somewhere” (meanwhile I just spent the last 5 days sleeping in hotels and flying all over North America for work).

So go for a drive, fuel, dinner, cost of extra curricular activities, hotels, buying crap you don’t need just to shut her up. The house isn’t big enough, the need to renovate, paint, change the furniture. Fuck me, it was a never ending back hole of spending $$ on things you didn’t need to satisfy someone who couldn’t be satisfied. Constant “what’s next?”

I realized since she moved out almost 3 years ago I haven’t changed hardly any furniture or things around the house. Cuz they’re ducking fine!!

I once tried to estimate the cost of a girlfriend, and I came up with around $6,000/year. That included regular dates, gifts (birthday, V-Day, anniversary, holidays, special), plus the occasional vacation.

That's assuming no marriage and no pregnancy, of course. Those are the big-ticket items, as we all know. But even having a girlfriend is a considerable expense.
