What's your desired end state?

u/stonepimpletilists posed this question in an askMRP thread. This is probably the idea that is of upmost importance in my head right now.

I knew early, around 12 years old or so, that I wanted to work with computers .. computer programming. I knew early that I wanted to finish high-school and go to college. I knew early that I wanted to find a girl in college, get engaged around the time I'm getting out of college and get married within a year or so of getting out of college. I knew early that I wanted a family with children.

These are all things that were in my "desired end state." Knew all of these things before I was 16 years old. You could ask why did I want these things, and I would say that's a different discussion than the one I'm having here.

I knew what I wanted back then. That's the discussion on the table here.

Fast forward a few years ... College done. Married <1 year after college. Had the first kid a little over a year after marriage.

Everything in my desired end state was accomplished. Everything... So my default (unexamined) desired end state was now to just keep things as they are. Status quo became the unseen, unplanned for goal.

I continued to live life and work a job, but not as a man should. I believe most of us married folk know where this can lead after 10+ years. A lot of the problems in our marriage boiled down to not having a more permanent desired end state and not re-evaluating and editing my desired end state as time passed. In fact ... I'll edit that last sentence to read something more like "A lot of the problems in our marriage with me boiled down to not having a ... desired end state." No woman (or 11yo child for that matter) wants to live with a guy who doesn't have a desired end state. And I have finally come to the point where I don't want to live as this guy either.

What do I want my life to look like in 6 months/1 year/5 years/10, 20, 30 years?

How do I want to influence my wife in the next 6 months/1 year/5 years/10, 20, 30 years?

What do I want to teach my kids this year? What do I want them to be when they leave my house?

This is work. This is hard work that takes time. It is freeing to know that I can choose my path and make my direction.

Here's to making the world my oyster again like I did back when I was 16!
