This may have been discussed before, but I've found a fair few bits of feminist material emphasising that we should not be teaching girls to avoid getting raped, but rather we should be teaching boys not to rape, as it's discriminatory for girls to have to act in a certain way to avoid something bad happening. Basically girls should be able to act however they want, and not get raped as a result. Fair enough.

The point is, assuming rape is a one way street (obvs isn't) it makes sense that society should teach girls to be careful about how they act in order to avoid getting raped, just as we should teach people to lock their doors at night to avoid getting robbed or to be careful about how they talk to people to avoid provoking violence. Of course, we should teach our children not to get in fights, rob people or rape, but the fact is that there are bad people out there who are going to do it anyway, so people need to take precautions.

People would call me crazy if I never locked my car and said that it's discriminatory, as a law abiding citizen, for me to have to go to the effort to do that because it would be wrong to rob me regardless of what I do with it.

Taking precautions is not discriminatory, it's just the way things are in the real world. Do feminists really think it's a realistic goal to eliminate rape altogether?

TL;DR teach people not to get raped, as well as not to rape.
