A random thought on arguing about circumcision.

This is how I structure the argument about circumcision, and I have used this against feminist professors and students in my philosophy and anthropology class....with that said, I will never forget the first cultural anthropology class I took. After learning about FGM, I already knew but we covered it, and other mutilations like penile bifurcation and removal..NSFL, we talked about FGM and this really intelligent guy I sat next to stood up and asked about circumcision only to have the female teacher basically roast him infront of 300+ students and claim that it wasn't the same. It was interesting to watch her do mental gymnastics around the issues. She spent a entire semester lecturing us daily about ethnocentrism and then went on a moral crusade against FGM and this was after lecturing us about how we shouldn't be ethnocentric and judge some african tribe that cuts boys penises in half and then she laughed at this guy for bringin up circumcision. She has a PHD...wtf.

Anyways...

Feminist: but...but...FGM and circumcision isn't the same, it isn't even in the same ballpark. Women lose sexual function and blah blah blah feminist idiocy blah blah blah.

Me: Fine. I agree with you. FGM and MGM are not the same, they are not even in the same ballpark as far as harm goes.

Me: MGM is much worse on a moral level. I know of no aspect of FGM that funds a multi billion dollar international industry. Doctor Phil doesn' put on a face cream, to indulge his vanity and get rid of wrinkles, made from the excised labia and clit and clitoral hood. I know of nothing in FGM and its various cultural practices where baby girls or even teen aged girls are biofarmed for profit.

You are correct that they are not the same. It doesn't matter that the frenulum and rigid band and foreskin and glans have the same, in some studies more, nerve endings as the clit and clitoral hood and inner/outer labia. The practices just aren't comparable because when done to women there isn't a profit motive behind the procedure.

They aren't the same because for every female in America who has had FGM performed on her there are 100,000+ males who have had it done. For every female internationally who has had it done, there are over 10,000 males who have had MGM performed on them.

The practices, in their scope and justifications, are incredibly similiar but just not comparable.

To hijack their own logic you could say some rapes are more acceptable than others because of the varying degrees of damage.

Of course they're pissed off when you use their own logic against them. I believe in equal rights and that's why I'm NOT a feminist.
