This is regarding the situation where a woman becomes pregnant by a man she's not married to. In this situation the woman has a few choices under the law: abortion, adoption or keeping the child.

If the woman decides to keep the child and the man doesn't agree with that choice the man is given none of these options under law that the woman enjoys and can in fact be made liable for child support for many years.

This situation is a stark example of gender inequality before the law. In Canada the Charter guarantees "equal benefit of the law regardless of sex." though, I'm not sure how the legal details work out in the US.

In any case, if parenthood is an option for one sex, fairness ( and gender equality before the law ) demand it should also be an option for the other.

Thousands of men are being hauled before the courts, being forced to pay child support and in some cases being imprisoned all of this while their fundamental human rights are being denied. And yet there is hardly a word to be heard on the subject. The shame of our times as a civilized society.
