Digital recorders are inexpensive and effective. In the state of Washington, recording without informed consent is legal except when there is a "reasonable expectation of privacy." I also agree that carrying a digital recorder is a good idea, I have a few, and I do carry at least one most of the time. For big venues, I use a Zoom H4, the older version. Works exceptionally well. For everyday carry, I have an old Sony that works well and is very durable. But there are many options, now, including disguised recorders that are good quality and some for less than $100.

I laugh in the face of physical threats. I am by no means a tough person- quite the opposite in fact- but if someone is resorting to silencing you physically, it means they can't defeat you intellectually. A Pyrrhic victory is still a victory when it comes to intellectual debate.

I would also recommend starting a journal or vocal record of your movements. The MRM will undoubtedly make history given our current progress. Our records today could be the stories of tomorrow. So, for our children, I keep a daily record of my thoughts and feelings of the issues of the time, so I cannot be demonized should the spectre of Feminism prevail.

Olympus has a tradition of making good recorders.

But smartphones do it pretty well, too. You can even get external microphones, or use the microphone on your headset.
